Reading, Authoring, and Interacting in a Another Language Using Office 2010

Thank you for your interest in the Global Experience Platform (GXP)’s team blog!

This blog entry marks our first post and introduces new Microsoft® Office 2010 multilingual features. The GXP team has focused this release on optimizing some situations global customers experience every day by adding new exciting features.

Collaboration across locations and languages is more common now than ever. This creates a series of challenges for information workers and home users. Microsoft® Office 2010 adds new features that enable key multilingual scenarios such as:

• Authoring using another language in a collaborative environment (Text and Document Translation);

• Supporting customers in a different language (ScreenTip Language); and

• Personalization of the Office Client environment to the customer’s language and culture (Language Preferences).

Text and Document Translation

Full Document Translation

The Translate Document feature uses the power of Microsoft’s browser-based Bing Translator (https://www.microsofttranslator.com/) to provide synchronized side-by-side translation.

The Bing.com translator used in this feature is available from: https://www.microsofttranslator.com

Mini Translator

The Mini Translator provides on-the-fly translation as users select a word or phrase and provides dictionary definitions of individual words. The Mini Translator also allows the user to copy the translated text and to hear the selected text using a text-to-speech engine.

Translate Selected Text

From the context menu, users can choose to translate selected text and view the result in the Research pane, on the right-side of their application.

ScreenTip Language

Whether in roaming scenarios or for technical support, multilingual users can see the names of display elements - such as buttons, menus and dialog box - in another language by pointing them with their mouse — using a translated ScreenTip without needing to install a traditional language pack.

Language Preferences

Microsoft® Office 2010 provides a new, redesigned interface to personalize the Office Client environment to the user’s language and culture. Users can now easily see what they have installed for multilingual support and even access the operating system Keyboard Layout dialog and Office Online tools from within the dialog.
