This month's presentations include a key Windows Server 2008 Security feature: Network Access Protection (NAP) and an Overview of System Centre Essentials 2007

Network Access Protection

nap1

Network Access Protection (NAP) is a new framework that allows an IT administrator to define health requirements for the network and to restrict computers that do not meet these requirements from communicating with the network. NAP enforces administrator-defined policies that describe the health requirements for the given organisation. For example, health requirements may be defined to include all updates to the operating system be installed, or having antivirus or antispyware software installed and updated. In this way, network administrators can define the baseline level of protection all computers carry when connecting to the network.

NAP can interoperate other vendor’s tools such as antivirus, patch management, VPN, and networking equipment, including following common scenarios:

• Check the health and status of roaming laptops
• Ensure the ongoing health of desktop computers
• Determine the health of visiting laptops
• Verify the compliance and health of unmanaged home computers
