Modern Workplace – Collaboration and Voice: Modernizing your SharePoint practice

Digital transformation is driving growth across Microsoft 365, Microsoft SharePoint, and Microsoft OneDrive. As part of Microsoft 365, SharePoint and OneDrive connect the workplace with intelligent content management and intranets. Momentum is strong with more than 300,000 organizations taking advantage of SharePoint and OneDrive as part of Office 365, including 85% of the Fortune 500 companies. There is an extraordinary community of more than 50,000 partners and 1 million developers who contribute to a $10 billion solutions ecosystem around SharePoint. SharePoint allows developers use their own development tools and preferred JavaScript frameworks to deliver new user experiences or enhance existing pages and portals.

At the heart of the modern SharePoint development is the SharePoint Framework (SPFx) – a page and web part model that provides full support for client-side SharePoint development, easy integration with SharePoint data, and support for open source tooling, such as Yeoman, Gulp, and Visual Studio Code. SPFx allows you to take advantage of the latest web templating and JavaScript frameworks, such as Angular, React, and Handlebars. For those working with Microsoft SharePoint Server 2016, Feature Pack 2 contains the foundation of modern web part hosting and editing experiences, including core SPFx APIs, SPFx package deployment, and property panes. With a single toolset, your development work can be reused when you or your client is ready to move to the cloud. If you watched the keynotes at Microsoft Ignite 2017, you may be familiar with modern page creation, new Team & Communication Sites, and Hub Sites. These new experiences were built using the SharePoint Framework. SPFx was first announced in May 2016 and reached general availability in February 2017. Since then partners have been actively utilizing SPFx and building innovative solutions that you can learn more about on the SharePoint Showcase website.

Has your SharePoint practice been modernizing along with SharePoint? If you have been waiting around to see what the future would hold for SPFx, it's time to get onboard and become part of the future of SharePoint development. With SPFx, you can build responsive, performant, and mobile ready apps and web parts from day one.

Next steps and resources

To get started, review new samples, controls, and solutions made available via the community driven SharePoint Patterns and Practices (PnP). SharePoint PnP is an open source initiative coordinated by SharePoint engineering. It's a channel for SharePoint engineering to share documentation, guidance, samples and reusable components with the community. PnP provides libraries and tools actively used across thousands of Office 365 tenancies. Check out their video training series the SharePoint Framework Tutorials and Training Videos and GitHub repositories and other SPFx samples at github.com/SharePoint.
