Microsoft Azure benefits and options – overview

In my current role at Microsoft, I help partners to cloud-enable their practices with Microsoft Azure, ranging from very small local partners just starting to build a relationship with Microsoft up to national partners that have been in the channel for many years and have offices across the United States. Each partner is at a different level of understanding and maturity as it relates to Azure, but a common theme for all of them is a lack of understanding of the Azure benefits that are available to give them hands-on experience with the platform.

I have written a 3-part series of posts to help demystify the Microsoft Azure benefits available to you.

Below, I’ve provided an overview of four programs and offerings that will help you get started with Azure as a Microsoft partner.

December 2015: The content below has been updated where necessary to reflect current programs and offerings.

Microsoft Azure free one-month trial

$200 one-time credit

Available to everyone

Any individual can get hands-on with Microsoft Azure by signing up for a free, one-time, 30-day subscription. Use your $200 Azure credit across your choice of Azure services: spin up a virtual machine, set up a website, build/host a backend for a mobile application, or encode/stream a video.

Microsoft does require you to provide a phone number and credit card during sign-up. This information is captured for validation/activation purposes and your credit card will not be charged. If you run out of credit during this trial, your Azure services are simply turned off.

BizSpark and BizSpark Plus

BizSpark: $750/month Azure credit for up to 3 years ($150/month per developer for up to 5 developers)

BizSpark Plus: Up to $120,000 of Azure cloud services

Available to start-ups

Through BizSpark, Microsoft supports your startup as you grow, providing you with enterprise software and tools that more established partners are already using to build software-based products or services. The cloud is essential to technology startups, and the BizSpark program has evolved to provide its members with access to the Microsoft Azure platform so that they can design, build and test their software applications in the cloud.

MPN membership: Microsoft Action Pack subscription

The Microsoft Action Pack subscription is available to members of the Microsoft Partner Network that do not have a competency.

Microsoft Action Pack subscription internal use rights benefits include a $100/month Azure credit.

MPN membership: Competencies

If you are a Microsoft partner that has achieved at least one gold or silver competency, your benefits include access to Azure through internal use rights as well as through MSDN subscriptions. What is available to you is based on whether you hold a silver or gold competency, and which competency you hold. In part 2 of this blog series, I’ll explain the different scenarios.
