The Microsoft Azure Partner Community is led by National Partner Technology Strategists from the Microsoft US Partner Team. Partner Community activities include blog posts, discussions on Yammer, newsletters, and community calls.

This is part 3 of our March series about addressing the Azure topics partners ask us about most frequently. Read about RemoteApp here and about Azure Site Recovery here.

Azure API Management overview

Recently, Microsoft introduced Azure API Management Premium, based on feedback from customers using Azure API Management that wanted more capacity, more throughput, and an even higher SLA. In this post, I’ll talk about your opportunities as a Microsoft partner to monetize this feature of Azure.

Prior to coming to Microsoft, I spent the bulk of my career supporting IT infrastructure. I heard about APIs, but did not spent much time working with them. Or so I thought. An Application Programming Interface, or API, is really just a standard way for interaction with a service, device, or platform. An example of this is the Windows Management Instrumentation.

Microsoft Azure provides a management layer between the developer and applications accessing the API and the API itself. By doing this, the API owner can control access to the API, monitor its health, and even provide some automated documentation. The illustration below best explains this.

Why Azure API Management is important to partners

Partners that already do application development know the importance of API, but with Azure API Management, there are other ways to monetize it. The update and management of API as it changes over time can be burdensome to customers. This opens an opportunity for regular updates and monitoring through the service. Azure API Management provides tools for monitoring and an interface for developer support. Both of these are opportunities for partners to build a managed service around. Organizations working in the Big Data and Machine Learning space may be able to offer access to their data and models through this API and create new revenue streams.

Here are two API Management monetization examples:

  • Dun & Bradstreet – Business Verification and Global Address Verification. These solutions use machine learning to conduct the match and provide a level of confidence of the match. D&B offers the service through a subscription model based on the number of transactions run through the solution. This allows them to capitalize the investment in their database of over 225 million businesses and the algorithm that they created to match them against requests.
  • Versium Analytics – Giving Score. This solution uses Machine Learning to generate a score for individuals or organizations who donate money. The score is used to predict how much and how often someone may donate to that organization. As with the D&B solution, they have created a subscription model for their IP based on the number of transactions per month.

How to get started

The Microsoft Azure website has an extensive library of API Management articles and videos.
