Today's post focuses on the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit. Otherwise known as MAP

With the release of MAP 7.0, the following are now included in the latest version

  • Windows 8 and Windows 7 Migration
  • Windows Server 2012 Migration
  • Server Consolidation with Hyper-V
  • Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Capacity Planning

The URL’s below have been updated for version 7.0

The MAP Toolkit is an agentless, automated, multi-product planning and assessment tool for quicker and easier desktop and server migrations.

MAP provides detailed readiness assessment reports and executive proposals with extensive hardware and software information, and actionable recommendations to help organizations accelerate their IT infrastructure planning process, and gather more detail on assets that reside within their current environment.

MAP also provides server utilization data for Hyper-V server virtualization planning; identifying server placements, and performing virtualization candidate assessments, including ROI analysis for server consolidation with Hyper-V.

The below URLs will provide you with all the required resources to test MAP in your own environment:

To assist with skilling up on the MAP Toolkit, below are some episodes on TechNet Edge that highlight the MAP Toolkit modules:

  • MVA: Microsoft Solution Accelerators for the Datacenter and Private Cloud - Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit – Server Consolidation -
  • MVA: Microsoft Solution Accelerators for the Datacenter and Private Cloud - Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit – Hyper-V & Private Cloud Fast Track -

The Word document attached to this blog post, is an example document found in the Sample Reports file published in the above links. This report should be viewed as an example to see the full value of this toolkit from Microsoft.

Along with the reports, there are Excel documents that provides insightful information for the IT Professional, it also assists the IT Professional produce a report that can be customized for their particular infrastructure and presented to the relevant Business Owners to either confirm initial speculations, or to motivate/justify the ROI of a certain project.

Below are a few short extracts from some of the produced Excel documentation, that highlights the amount of information collected by running the toolkit:

Image 1 is of a Server Consolidation Report.

Once completed with its scanning, the MAP toolkit will formulate this report to technically highlight how one can consolidate existing physical serves, on to virtualization hosts

Images 2 through 5 below, are from a Sample Document called Hardware And Software Summary, and highlight the information returned that can assist with an Inventory Collection ahead of any proposed project.

In conclusion, having personally spent a large amount of time running this tool at past customers ahead of any proposed new project work or to just get a sanity check on other 3rd party Asset Inventory tool that might be in place, I highly recommend that at least the Sample Reports be downloaded to get a real understanding of MAP and what it can produce.

Alongside all the out-the-box documentation, the database that is created while running MAP has a vast amount of more information that can be harvested by viewing/querying the database directly.

Our next post regarding Solution Accelerators will highlight the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT). Until then…

Cheers, Morgan…
