PowerShell for Sharepoint FBA via SQL. And PowerShell for everything!


Kirk “has-more-points-than-I-do” Evans shares some PowerShell to configure the SQL Server Provider for FBA, for Sharepoint 2010.

A long time ago, I wrote a blog post that shows how to configure the SQL Server Provider for FBA in SharePoint 2010.  I have been working on a project that requires me to configure FBA, and I got kind of tired of following my own blog post.

So: SharePoint FBA from a database-based source, automated through PowerShell scripting!

And since I’m editing, I get to voice an opinion!

It took me an awfully long time to accept PowerShell. Aside from just unfamiliarity, I work with a lot of customers on 2003-era OSs with various products. But I’m really looking forward to the day when I can go to a customer site, look at a random PC, and be reasonably confident that PowerShell will be on it already.

In the meantime, I come up with crazy backwards-compatible methods of doing stuff through CMD that’d be a simple one-liner in PowerShell!

But now we’re over the halfway mark, I think.

Exchange and SharePoint folk routinely use PowerShell for administration (they’ve had to for years now!), and in Windows Server 2012, PowerShell-friendly GUIs are baked in to the management tools. Windows 8 puts it right there on the File menu in Explorer.

My pitch: If you’re like me, and you’ve been procrastinating while fiddling with your CMD and CSCRIPT scripts, it’s time to dip your toes in. I’ve spent a couple of days this week fiddling with other people’s PS scripts, and I feel like I’m on the cusp of getting it. Think I’ll have to sell my boss on attending the next PowerShell workshop!
