Today was my first ever touch at SBS 2003 – in a production situation. Ive never actually seen much of it before and because its all linked up together I was kinda reticent (retentive?) to use it. A friend called me though because he needed a hand…and as I had never used it before I thought it was a great opportunity to get my hands dirty on it so to speak. So I fixed his multiple site IIS issue (he wanted to host them all on the same IP and port using host headers) using the same tool that Id always used (IIS Manager). Ok….not that different…..
Then he had a VPN problem – so I started having a look using the manual RRAS tools I was used to using….and thought there has to be an easier way, after all SBS is meant to be easier right? I called a good friend in Adelaide, Dean Calvert MVP for SBS 2003. “Golden Rule:”, he said “Use the wizards, they work!”. Dammit I thought….I hate the wizards….”How can I just get ISA 2004 on this thing?” I said.
“You need the SBS 2003 Premium Edition Service Pack 1 kit” he said, “Its in there”.
Hmm….so I did what he said and used the wizards and lo and behold the box worked. It routed properly and firewalled it. Not as easy to administer as ISA Server security mind you, but at least it took the effort out of a manual RRAS firewall configuration….next step….order the SBS Premium Edition Service Pack 1 kit…
