Windows Server 2003 SP1 Known Issues and Resolutions

Exchange Server 2003

Issue:  If a user tries to access a mailbox by using Microsoft Outlook Web Access, that user receives the following error message:  500 - Internal server error.  If you log on to a client computer by using administrator rights and then try to access a mailbox by using Outlook Web Access, you are successful.

Exchange Server 2003

Issue: After you run the Security Configuration Wizard in Windows Server 2003 SP1, Outlook users may not be able to connect to their accounts

Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003

Issue: SMS client computers that do not have the required permissions cannot create or send a Client Configuration Request (CCR) file to a management point in SMS 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Microsoft Operations Manager 2005

Issue: When you try to view the "Computer Groups" container in the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Administrator Console, you receive the following error message:  0x800706be: The remote procedure call failed.

Additional events are logged in the Application event log on the MOM Management Server.

Microsoft Operations Manager 2005

Issue: When you use the Install Agent Wizard to install a Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 agent on an unmanaged computer, you receive the following error message:  The MOM Server could not access registry key or value 'SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment' on computer <unmanaged computer name>.

Windows Server 2003 Support Tools

Issue: The Windows Support Tools are not automatically installed when you install Windows Server 2003 SP1.

Resolution: To install the Windows Support Tools on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, run the Suptools.msi program  that is in the Support\Tools folder on the Windows Server 2003 SP1 CD

NOTE: You must uninstall previous versions of the Support Tools before installing the SP1 version.

 

Windows Server 2003 System Preparation Tool

Issue:  Windows Server 2003 SP1 requires a new version of SYSPREP.

Resolution: Install the latest version of SYSPREP from the Support\Tools folder on the Windows Server 2003 SP1 product CD

Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004 Standard Edition

Issue: Virtual private network (VPN) management does not work correctly.

Application Center 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Issue: The application cannot connect to the server when a cluster is created.

Windows Server 2003 COM+

Issue: The DTC stops responding (hangs) or leaks memory when the DTC is used with Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004.

You experience slow performance when there are available threads in the thread pool.

Resolution: A post SP1 hotfix rollup is available to address these issues.  See article 896729 Availability of Windows Server 2003 Post-Service Pack 1 COM+ Hotfix

Routers, Firewalls, and VPN’s.

Issue: Win2k3 SP1 added a new RPC element called Bind Time Feature Negotiation.

This new addition to the RPC protocol may not be recognized by firewalls, routers

or VPN's. If such frames are not recognized, routers, firewalls and VPNs including

products from Checkpoint Software, Watchguard, ISA Server 2000 and ISA Server 2004

will drop the new RPC bind request frames. As a result any operation that requires

an RPC bind may now fail with RPC errors if the caller OS has W2K3 SP1 installed.

Resolution: The resolution varies depending on the product.  This fixes a bunch of them
