Big Dreams Become Reality in Beijing

Watching both her parents farming in a rural village in northwest China, Yutiao Wang knew she didn’t want the same life for herself. The gruelling farm work has taken a toll on her mother and yields about USD625 a year for the family. Like most families in Lintao, Gansu Province, one of the poorest regions of China, Yutiao’s parents couldn’t afford to send her to school. Her test scores weren’t good enough to get the funding for high school, she said, so she had to stop after nine years of basic education. But that wasn't always her dream.
