Book of the Month for January 2008: The Truth About Food

truth Happy New Year everyone and Welcome to 2008!

Now I know some of you are getting ready for your News Year's resolution.  Chances are one of your resolutions is going to be to get into shape or lose weight, according the the U.S. government it is one of the popular choices (full list here: Popular New Year's Resolutions).  Getting fit is really educating yourself.  Knowledge truly is power and something I have been trying to do since April is build my knowledge on how to get fit.  It is tough getting started but books like these make it easier.  That is why I chose this book for the 1st day of the year.  This is a great book by Jill Fullerton-Smith with a forward by Mehmet Oz:

The Truth About Food: What You Eat Can Change Your Life

This book is based on a BBC TV series that was on the Discovery channel and looks at setting out the truth about food and getting rid of the myths that have been created over the years by our friends, family and yes even our mothers.  :-).   Some of the myths and questions that the book will change your thinking on:

  • Do carrots really improve your eyesight, or would Popeye have something to say about that?
  • Do overweight people have a slower metabolic rate than skinnier people or is it the other way around?
  • What really causes a "sugar high" in children and what is the real danger of sugar for our children?
  • Why do you feel instantly better after eating chocolate?
  • What makes us really feel full?

If you are interested in the answers to these questions check out the book!  It does a great job of provided the scientific evidence behind their conclusions and I wish I would have gotten to see the special on Discovery, if anyone has seen please comment and let me know what you thought. The Truth About Food is arranged into six no-nonsense sections:

  1. How to Stay Young and Beautiful
  2. How to Be Sexy and Fertile
  3. How to Look Good and Stay Slim
  4. How to Perform at Your Peak
  5. How to Stay Healthy
  6. How to Raise Healthy Kids

So enjoy the new year and getting into shape and good luck!

HELP WANTED

As you have noticed I have decided to start the book of the month club again, however I need your advice and opinions. I stopped doing the book of the month around June of 2007 because I found between my workload and family I was not getting the books read in a timely fashion.  However one of my resolutions is to continue in the book of the month review.  However, I am afraid that I may fall behind again like I did last year, so I have an idea.  I am debating of including other types of media to review to give me time to get caught up on my reading, so here is what I am thinking of reviewing in addition to books:

  • Games
  • Movies
  • etc.

So what do you think?  Would you read about that stuff or should I just skip with the books and make a book of the two months club.  :-)  Email your ideas and we will go from there.

Happy New Year!
