Recipient Management, Policies, and Permissions in Exchange Server 2007: Webcast (06-15-2007)

Good afternoon all my blog enabled, mailbox enabling Exchange administrators. J

First, thank you for attending the webcast on Exchange recipient management. I hope you really like a lot of the new tools and how we accomplish some common tasks! The new management interface is fantastic and the management shell is simply amazing.

Here are some other resources to you:

Question: What if a user already had a user mailbox and you went to create a new one for that existing user?
Answer: In the GUI you will not even be able to select a user that already has a mailbox in the user selection screen. If you try the command in the exchange command shell you will receive an error, along the lines of invalid user or mailbox.

Question: What is the plan for Power Shell Remote access?
Answer: PowerShell does that today and will allow you to run remote commands on the other server, as long as both systems have PowerShell loaded you should be good to go. However, after further research into this it seems that we'll need to be proficient with WMI to manipulate remote machines for release 1.0. You can call WMI or .NET Framework and use them to run against remote machines.

I found a really good Q/A log from the scripting guys here: https://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/webcasts/psweek/day2qanda.mspx

Question: can you target specific users for managed folder settings, have different retention levels for different users like you can in 2003.
Answer: Yes you can, here is a link to a management shell command: https://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/scripts/message/default.mspx?mfr=true

Here is a screen shot on what the GUI looks like when you right click on a user, select the mailbox settings and select storage quotas:

Question: How do you recommended to migrate Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007
Answer: Depending on your goals for the migration, it could take several paths, take a look here for some great guidance: Upgrading to Exchange Server 2007

Question: Are there still Exchange tabs available within ADUC?
Answer: Yes, [UPDATE] and I should clarify that the tabs are only available if youl have an exsiting Exchange 2003 server more specifically only if you still have the Exchange 2003 system manager installed on the server. In a pure Exchange 2007 environment you will not have the tabs.  The product group really focused on making sure the UI’s are separate.

Question: Can you still see everything in ADSI Edit?
Answer: Yes, and no, but with PowerShell you will get the same effect without having to use ADSI edit. ADSI edit is complex and not that flexible in times. PowerShell provides flexibility and usage better than ADSI edit could ever do. This is a good example of a script that uses the Exchange management shell that crosses both AD and Exchange boundaries: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb430758.aspx
