Book of the Month for June 2007: Orbiting the Giant Hairball

hairball Have you ever felt your creativity needed a quick start not sure how to redirect your creative juices in the company you are working for?  Even though we are all inspired (or at least hopefully inspired) by the company you work sometimes we need to get things done differently!  If you want to keep your company's mission at heart of what you do, and need to get some more practical insight to improve your creativity then:
Orbiting the Giant Hairball: A Corporate Fool's Guide to Surviving with Grace by Gordon MacKenzie is for you!

This book is for managers, new managers, innovators or anyone else needs to look at new ways to innovate existing policies or procedures.  This book is written by Gordon MacKenzie who worked at Hallmark and he found himself mired in rules, systems and thoughts of this how we have always done things.  If the wheel ain't broke don't fix it!  We have all heard that and what has happened is what happens in most company's these rules and process' form a a giant hairball that we cannot navigate or get out of.  At the center of the hairball is the company's core mission and values.  So what are you supposed to do, I recommend what book says!  We need to Launch into Orbit.  By being able to keep the gravity of our company at the heart of what we do then we will be able to achieve higher levels of creativity.

This book is a great read and very well written,  Gordon does a great job of telling you stories from his existing company that will resound with anyone who reads this book.  If you are looking to launch into orbit than I highly recommend taking a look at this book not only inspire yourself but also if you are in the position to lead this book will help you look at your existing constructs to improve your organization!
