Did you get my email? Yes, but it took forever!

Hopefully we are all receiving email almost nearly instantaneously. Sometimes however email is flowing only roughly faster than maple syrup in Vermont during December. In other words it can be slow, and aside from making sure we have the cable plugged in, we cannot find the cause. So what could be happening?

One of the common causes that may have caused Outlook to run slowly is large .pst or .ost files. You may see symptoms like:

  • Outlook 2007 responds slowly when you are composing an e-mail message.
  • It takes a long time to move an item from one folder to another folder.
  • It takes a long time to delete an item.

To avoid this you can do some basic things, like split your large .pst files over a few files, or reduce mail box size. There are several more suggestions.

Take a look here for more suggestions and more details:
You may experience performance problems when you are working with items in a large .pst file or in a large .ost file in Outlook 2007

However, we had to fix the problem. On April 13th we released a patch for Outlook 2007 to improve the performance of Outlook 2007 with large .psts. Aside from addressing that issue; the update also fixes a problem in which a calendar item that is marked as private is opened if it is found by using the Search Desktop feature.

You can get the file the update here: Update for Outlook 2007 (KB933493)

Hopefully with the patch to Outlook 2007 you will experience improved mail flow and overall better performance.

So what is the next problem we need to address? We have to work on accidental email deletion. How serious is this problem?

Watch out for those mosquitoes.  :-)
