Configuration Manager 2007 Desired Configuration Management Configuration Packs

All downloadable Configuration Packs for ConfigMgr are available at Microsoft Pinpoint, however it isn’t easy to see all the packs at once, so I have sorted them and listed them here for ease.

I have simplified the titles of these packs for easier reading.  This list is complete as of February 2010, and includes the release date.

Licensing Considerations

There are licensing considerations when using DCM in ConfigMgr.  There are two type of Management Licence (ML) available for managing servers – Standard and Enterprise.

The information at ConfigMgr Licensing Site explains what is a standard and what is an advanced workload.  The two editions of the Configuration Manager 2007 R2 Server ML are differentiated primarily by the server workload running in the OSE being managed. An Enterprise Server ML is required for full application and server desired configuration management, including the proactive management of systems for configuration settings that follow an industry-leading framework for managing information in changing regulatory and business environments, while a Standard Server ML is limited to operating system and basic workload desired configuration management.

In summary:

Standard ML

The Standard Management License allows a customer to manage:

  • Inventory for any workload

  • Software distribution for any workload

  • Patch management for any workload

  • Desired Configuration Management (DCM) for basic workloads

    • Base OS or system hardware

    • Storage/File/Print (FTP, NFS, SMB, and CIFS)

    • Networking (DHCP, DNS, WINS, and RADIUS)

The Standard Server ML may only be licensed per OSE.

Enterprise ML

The Enterprise Management license allows a customer to manage:

  • All Standard Server ML functionality

  • Inventory for any workload

  • Software distribution for any workload

  • Patch management for any workload

  • Desired Configuration Management (DCM) for basic workloads

    • Base OS or system hardware

    • Storage/File/Print (FTP, NFS, SMB, and CIFS)

    • Networking (DHCP, DNS, WINS, and RADIUS)

  • All functionality beyond what is covered by a Standard Server ML including DCM for applications and compliance

The Enterprise Server ML may only be licensed per OSE. It is also available as a component of the System Center Server Management Suites, which includes the rights to manage an unlimited number of OSEs per physical server in the Datacenter Suite.
