Do I need a specific Cumulative Update Release (UR) in order to upgrade to SCOM 2012 or 2012 SP1 or 2012 R2?

There is sometimes confusion over upgrades, if you can just upgrade to the next version, or if there is an CU (Cumulative Update) or UR (Update Rollup) minimum level that is required BEFORE a major version upgrade. The MAJOR VERSION upgrade path is below, which Marnix talked about HERE.  This article covers IN PLACE upgrades…

Applying Update Rollup 3 (UR3) to OpsMgr 2012 SP1

Update Rollup 3 (UR3) for OpsMgr 2012 SP1 shipped originally several months back.  I took a cautious approach to this update, as there were some components pulled early for DPM (all have been resolved).  Does not look like anything was an issue in SCOM, beyond the known issues documented at the bottom of this article. …

Hotfix to be aware of: 2790831 – Handle leak in WMI on WS2012 and Win8

Available at:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2790831/en-us   This hotfix addresses an issue found in Windows Server 2012 (and Win8) that can be exposed when performance data is queried via WMI.  Products that regularly query WMI for performance data are SCOM, SCVMM, and SCDPM.  Since ConfigMgr also depends on WMI so heavily, you might consider this for Win8…

A new feature in R2-CU4 – reconnecting to SQL server after a SQL outage

There is a new feature added to the R2 Cumulative Update 4 hotfix, which I recently wrote about HERE.  This new feature enables the OpsMgr Management Server to tolerate a SQL outage hosting the OperationsManager database better in specific cases.  This feature is NOT enabled by default, by design.  In order to enable this feature…

WMI leaks memory on Server 2008 R2 monitored agents

Here is something that a customer brought to my attention, and is probably impacting you already.   They noticed that WMI on some of their Server 2008R2 monitored agents was consuming a large amount of memory – and continually increasing.  I started tracking this in SCOM by writing a rule to collect the Process\Private…

The new and improved guide on HealthService Restarts. Aka – agents bouncing their own HealthService

I have written many articles in the past on HealthService restarts.  A HealthService restart is when the agent breaches a pre-set threshold of Memory use, or handle count use, and OpsMgr bounces the agent HealthService to try and correct the condition. The Past: Here are a few of the previous articles: http://blogs.technet.com/kevinholman/archive/2009/03/26/are-your-agents-restarting-every-10-minutes-are-you-sure.aspx http://blogs.technet.com/kevinholman/archive/2009/06/22/health-service-and-monitoringhost-thresholds-in-r2-how-this-has-changed-and-what-you-should-know.aspx   Generally…

Fixing troubled agents

Sometimes agents either will not “talk” to the management server upon initial installation, and sometimes an agent can get unhealthy long after working fine.  Agent health is an ongoing task of any OpsMgr Admin’s life. This post in NOT an “end to end” manual of all the factors that influence agent health…. but that is…

Do you get alerts about very high handle count on your RMS?

You might see alerts, or critical state health of your RMS in your environment, caused by the handle count being very high on the HealthService. Typically – you will see this on an RMS that is running on an x64 operating system, especially if you have a large amount of RAM.  We change state…

Do you randomly see a MonitoringHost.exe process consuming lots of CPU?

Randomly, you might see a single MonitoringHost.exe process on an agent, consuming 100% CPU. (Or 50%, or 25% depending on how many cores you have).  This process will stay at this level, and will not recover.  If you restart the OpsMgr HealthService, the problem goes away, and might not return for days or even weeks….
