Does SCOM 2012 R2 support monitoring Windows Server 2016?

This has been coming up quite a bit lately –

The answer is YES, and we have updated the SCOM 2012 R2 documentation:

There is no minimum UR level required to support this.  However, we always recommend applying the most current cumulative update rollup to your SCOM agents.

Thanks Kevin. How about SCOM 2012 SP1?

    1. Kevin Holman says:

Eric – we have not yet announced if we will or won’t support monitoring Windows Server 2016 with a SCOM 2012 SP1 infrastructure. I will try and find out a formal statement. Most new effort goes into the current product (SCOM 2016) and the previous supported product (SCOM 2012 R2). SCOM 2012 SP1 will end mainstream support on 7/11/2017. So my guess would be “I doubt it”…. that we would invest testing and potential updates/fixes for a platform that will be falling out of mainstream support so soon, but I will try and find out.

Is there a reason why you haven’t updated?

      1. Eric Lazar says:

Yes, but not a good one ;). Thanks again for your commitment to keeping everyone informed! The SCOM community is one thing that sets it apart from most other products.

I am told that we will support SCOM 2012 SP1 monitoring Windows Server 2016 RTM. It wont be formal until the documentation reflects it.

  2. Andreas Sobczyk says:

But is there any management pack for SCOM 2012 R2 to monitor 2016 servers? or should you use the one from the 2016 media?

    1. Kevin Holman says:

The GA release of the Windows Server 2016 management pack has not shipped yet. The only MP available today 11/11/2016 is the Technical Preview MP for Windows Server 2016. I don’t recommend using that MP in production.

Historically – SCOM management packs are shipped within 90 days of a product shipping. Windows Server 2016 release was announced at the end of September, and hit the GA milestone mid-October.

The GA release for the Windows Server 2016 OS MP is expected to be released very soon…. so I’d recommend waiting for production environments and begin testing that MP when it ships.

Is there a list of 2016 management packs which are supported or not with scom212r2 (supportmatrix)
