I had a request from a customer recently, for an updated version of the WINS Management pack. Microsoft’s WINS MP is currently an old MOM 2005 converted MP, and only supports NT4.0, Windows 2000 Server, and Server 2003. My customer still relies on WINS for some legacy requirements, and they use Server 2008 for their WINS server platform.
There is just no simple way to “convert” a MOM 2005 conversion MP into a native SCOM 2007 MP. Therefore, I wrote a new one. I wanted an opportunity to test out the VSAE Snippets function, which I recently wrote about here: How to use Snippets in VSAE to write LOTS of workflows, quickly!
Using Management Pack Viewer’s export to Excel function, I knew it would it should be easy to come up with a simple CSV file to feed Visual Studio to create the bulk of the MP quickly. You can get the latest MPViewer here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dmuscett/archive/2012/02/19/boris-s-tools-updated.aspx
So I recreated the WINS MP “somewhat” quickly using VSAE, then I added some views, performance collection, and a service monitor for the WINS service to round this out.
This MP will discover and monitor WINS on Server 2003, 2008, 2008R2, 2012, and 2012R2. If you need to change this scope, you can edit the version information in the discovery:
There is a single class, “WINS Server” which discovers any Windows Server Operating System that has the WINS service installed, and it is set to automatic startup.
A single monitor, monitoring the running state of the WINS service.
140 event log rules, looking for known issues written to the event logs.
I also collected a few counters, so you can monitor how busy your WINS servers are:
The MP is attached below. This is being published as an EXAMPLE ONLY. It is not official nor is it supported by Microsoft.
