Xbox 360 and Netflix Team Up

imageLos Angeles—An exciting new home theater experience is coming to living rooms this holiday season. At E3, Microsoft and Netflix, the world's largest online movie rental service, today unveiled an exclusive partnership to offer the ability to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from Netflix to your television via Xbox 360®.

Xbox 360 will be the only game system that lets you instantly watch movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix. This movie-watching innovation will be available to Xbox LIVE® Gold members who are also Netflix subscribers, and will let those users enjoy streaming movies from Netflix on Xbox LIVE at no additional cost.

" Watching movies at home will never be the same. Netflix on Xbox 360 is an entertainment first." — John Schappert, Microsoft

A growing library of more than 10,000 movies and TV episodes will be available from Netflix when it launches on Xbox LIVE in late fall, with more choices added over time. Through this agreement, along with the existing Video Store, Xbox 360 will be home to more movies and TV shows on demand than any other device connected to the TV. Xbox LIVE quickly and easily connects you and your friends to the entertainment you want—with no PC required for viewing.

Interact, Play, and Enjoy
Netflix on Xbox 360 is an important component of the new Xbox experience, a new generation of games and entertainment experiences that will be available on Xbox 360 this fall. The new Xbox experience represents the first time in history that a mass-market consumer electronics device has been re-invented through free software, giving people more fun and intuitive ways to interact, play, and enjoy entertainment content.

You know, if MS would redesign the hardware to eliminate the RRoD and address the drive noise and fan noise issues, this might be an outstanding piece of equipment to have in the living room.  Unfortunately, I can’t bring myself to buy one, since I know that as soon as I crack open the case to replace the noisy fan unit with an aftermarket model, my warranty is void.  With my luck, I would get the RRoD the next day.  This is not intended to be snarky; just an honest opinion.

In many ways I agree.  I would love an appliance sitting there that does everything as well and is liquid cooled and whisper quiet.

Playing games from the hard drive is going to help on noise by not spinning the DVD drive up at such a high rate.

Imagine how the architecture might change if we all had 100MB internet connections, a decent primary drive that ships with the machine, and an eSATA port for external drive expansion.

How about streaming directly to XBox360 as well?

How about "LiveLife" to allow live concerts through home studios for mucisians like does?

I have had the XBox360 in my living room since XMas 2006 – the trick to eliminate noise from the nuit is to put it in a TV Console with a glass front and air circulation through the back. I have it hooked up to my home network so my entire audio, photo and home video collection on my home desktop is viewable via the XBox 360 on my living room TV.

This is truly an awesome experience! I just wish I could download content during the night to view during the day since this site will be using Silverlight to stream 3600 hours of live content – more than all previous Olympics live video content combined!

Great work! Looking for more innovation around XBox 360 becoming the center of my home entertainment.
