I read this really cool article today.
It talked about the decline in attendance at seminars and training events. In today's world it's harder to get management to approve time away from your job to attend these. This article had some great suggestions on how to create value for your manager from you attending these events, and specific steps you can take to make sure management is aware of what you learned. It sounds so simple and logical.
