TechEd NorthAmerica 2012: Registration and What’s in the Bag!

Today was registration day at TechEd North America 2012 so myself at Pete Calvert headed off to go through proceedings and pick up the bag.  From what I can see this was the first year they had a self registration process which allows you to register without any assistance from staff.  Mine didn’t work so I had to register the normal way. Not sure why it didn’t work but they sent me to assisted registration pretty much straight away.  They must have been anticipating issues!  Everything went pretty smoothly from there.

The next step of course was to pick up the bag and T-shirt that was being given to all attendees.  As you may know this year is the 20th anniversary of TechEd North America so the organisers are celebrating in a number of ways.  One of those is the bag.  This year attendees get the choice of 3 different styles for the TechEd bag being given away.  Here is a photo of all three.

So you had a choice of 1, 2 or 3 going from left to right.  Pete chose number 3 which is the camouflage one and I chose the silver one.  I don’t have any silver laptop bags so I had to go for that one!  Here is our 2 bags together.

Which brings me to what’s in the bag itself.  The bag has been done by a company called Looptworks.  They make clothes and other items from 100% industrial excess.  According to the company the bag is made of recycled materials.  A process they call upcycling.  They convert excess materials from other manufacturing processes into new materials such as this bag.  And apparently the backpack conserves 33.6 gallons of water and avoids 71% of carbon emissions.  That’s a good thing and a nice way to celebrate 20 years of TechEd!  Below is my bag; both inside and out.

Plus we got a 20th anniversary T-shirt.  Very metro styled!

And a nice water bottle!

The rest of the bag was your standard conference materials.  I only kept the stuff I needed to bring to booth’s to win prizes.  The rest goes to the recycling booth.  Here is a photo album of the rest.

That’s about it for now.  I’m heading to the hotel pool for the rest of the day before all the action begins this evening.
