For those of you that are testing out SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2 we have some good news for you. System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 SP1 is now available as a Release Candidate to test. This update adds 2 keys changes. Support for Dynamic Memory and RemoteFX. I’ve been running SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2 for awhile on my demo servers and have missed the rich management capabilities that SCVMM provides. Prior to this release it did not support Hyper-V hosts running SP1. Well now it does which is very cool indeed. In order to get this all working there are a few steps you need to take.

  • First thing is to update your management server to SP1 – Mine detected I was running the RTM code and updated it fine. Once you do that then you should be on build Version 2.0.4516.0 Service Pack 1

  • The next thing you need to do is upgrade all your Hyper-V Hosts. This is a simple case of loading up the Virtual Machine Manager console > Hosts > All Hosts then right clicking on each host and choosing update agent. Once this job has finished then you will be able to manage your Hyper-V SP1 hosts with Virtual Machine Manager.
  • The last piece to update the Virtual Machine Manager Console application that you have running on any of your client machines.

Once you have done all this you can now manage Dynamic Memory and RemoteFX using Virtual Machine Manager. Below are a couple of screenshots showing some of the UI changes.
