(Don’t) Shutdown Vista in 3 keystrokes

I saw David Overton's recent post on the quickest way to shutdown Windows using the keyboard.  He recommends using the the following key strokes:

Ctrl+Esc (Windows Key), Right, Right, Right, u

Well that's 5 key strokes - and I can do it in three.  All you need to do is make changes to the power settings (as shown in the screenshot above).  With this configuration the key combo is:

Ctrl+Esc (Windows Key), Right, Enter

However, this is all irrelevant because with Vista you should never really have to shutdown your machine.  We recommend that you use the sleep feature instead which combines the best of both worlds, with a hybrid of standby and hibernate.  This means you can resume your activities extremely quickly (productivity friendly) whilst saving as much power as possible (environmentally friendly).

    Hi Tim

    Thanks for your comment!

Unfortunately, your friend will not be able to get a prompt upon pressing the power key.  You can specify however which action takes place when pressing the power key (could be shutdown) and specify what happens when she closes the lid (could be sleep).  I’m not aware of any 3rd party software either that could do exactly what you want.

As an aside If she’s running Vista I would encourage her to only use Sleep anyway – it take a few seconds to goto sleep and also to resume – much faster than shutting down and booting up.  I’ve not shutdown my laptop for nearly 3 months now – I just love the sleep function!

    Hey Dragan,

What hardware are you running?  Have you got the latest BIOS from your motherboard manufacturer?

I have been doing this since Beta 2.  Personally I like shutting down then using hibernation or standby.  I like the fact that I am not forced to use the new shutdown feature.  I have choice and LOVE IT.  Once it is released I will play with the new shutdown feature and see how well it works. (I use XP now and hibernation, and programs don’t seem to shutdown correctly so I need to reboot every so often)

  4. I tried to use new sleep feature, but my computer reboots when I send it to sleep…

    ever since Beta2, and now I have RC2 – 5744

Just came across this blog entry. A friend of mine with Vista has a laptop, and would like to have the laptop be able to do two things, though not necessarily at the same time. She would like to press the power button on her laptop and either a) have the laptop either standby or shutdown, and b) ask her what she wants to do. This question was posed to me some time ago, and if I remember correctly, she was trying to get it to ask her what she wanted to do, but I posted both options just in case. Thanks for your time. (Please remove NOSPAM from the following e-mail address if you will be contacting me.) Much appreciated.
