I just found an excellent, excellent, excellent post by Long Zheng which explains the complicated beast which is Windows Vista version branching.

He listened to a pod-cast by Sven Hallauer, Director of Release Management for Windows Vista and interpreted his thoughts onto an underground like map which looks like this:

It helps explain why there are two types of build currently circulating inside Microsoft, 5700+ which I like to think of as the 7-Series, and the 5500+ which I like to think of as the 5-Series.
