Windows Azure Infrastructure Services (IAAS) – Continuing Innovation for the Cloud OS Ecosystem

Yesterday was another exciting step forward in Microsoft’s Cloud OS vision as we announced the general availability of the new Windows Azure infrastructure services, including Virtual Machines, and Virtual Network.  These technologies will enable customers to meet growing business needs by providing an on-demand and scalable infrastructure in the public cloud.  This is also an important release for our hosting service provider partners as it shows the continuous commitment to new technologies that we also make available to partners.


Part of the Cloud OS vision is about giving customers the choice of where to deploy their datacenter assets and ensuring a consistent experience between these environments.  At Microsoft we’ve learned how to offer services to millions of customers with high levels of availability and low costs and we actively work to share these learnings with our partners.  For example, the 2012 wave of infrastructure products (Windows Server, System Center and others) was designed with service providers in mind, based on learnings from our own datacenter operations.  This included a multitude of new features such as multi-tenancy through network virtualization, massive scale in the hypervisor, simple business continuity solutions with Hyper-V Replica, and an API layer for System Center.  But it also included services that were more complete coming right “out of the box” such as the ability to easily offer Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) for virtual machines as well as a high-density, scalable web site solution.


These technologies are available at no cost to service providers leveraging Windows Server & System Center.  They were originally created and hardened in Windows Azure, and then brought to the Windows Server-based datacenters for our hosting partners to use.  In doing so, they’re able to lower their development cost as well as deployment / operation costs for what, in many cases, may still be manual activities.  They’re also able to participate in the growing ecosystem of customers running Windows Server & System Center in their datacenters who are looking for that consistency in a hosted environment.  A great example of this is Telenor, a mobile carrier based in Norway that as of Dec 31st 2012 had 148 million mobile subscribers in the Nordics, Central Eastern Europe and Asia.  When they decided to migrate to SharePoint 2013 across their 18 business units in 12 countries, they chose Windows Azure for their test/dev. environment for the ease of scale and ability to quickly power on and off servers and pay for only what they used.  When the testing is complete, they will move the entire deployment into a hosting service provider’s datacenter for ongoing operations.  This is the power of consistency across Cloud OS environments and underscores the opportunity to our service provider partners.

Therefore each new release in any part of this Cloud OS ecosystem is a win for the other portions and, most importantly, a big win for our mutual customers.
