Windows 8.1 Preview Explorer.exe crashes

After upgrading to Windows 8.1 Preview explorer.exe might crash with an error which looks similar to this:

Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 6.3.9431.0, time stamp: 0x51bce434
Faulting module name: dlnashext.dll, version: 12.0.9431.0, time stamp: 0x51bcfb3d
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x000000000000d56c
Faulting process id: 0x180c
Faulting application start time: 0x01ce730758420ce9
Faulting application path: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\System32\dlnashext.dll
Report Id: a1195f3d-defd-11e2-bea5-f4b7e2e6b5f6

You can disable the DLNA Shell Extension to prevent this from happening. Copy and past the following information into a text file and save it as a .reg file (.e.g “import.reg”).

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Blocked]
"{289AF617-1CC3-42A6-926C-E6A863F0E3BA}"=""

Restart Explorer.exe or your machine afterwards.

    thanks for sharing.

For me it was not the DLNA I was able to leave it in the "Approved" part of the reg.  It was Autodesk inventor 2014.  I removed the app and presto, after a reboot all worked perfectly.

So erik… how did you plug this script into reg editor.. i dunno how

  4. FlaX says:

It worked, thank you very much. Is this something that will be fixed within an windows update you think?

  5. Pieter says:

Hi FlaX, I'm not sure, it's a beta product so it might not be fixed until RTM.

  6. Devid says:

    Hi,

The reason why it is crashing is that you might have a DLNA device in your network that has Special characters, like ":" in the name. Either you remove the device from the network or disable the DLNA sharing of that device.

  7. Kevin says:

    It works

  8. Erik says:

Worked for me, but the instructions were not very helpful.  I saved a .reg file with the information and then used Registry Editor (by searching for command, running it and entering regedit) to try to import the file.  It didn't work saying it wasn't a registry file.  So, I manually created the string in Registry Editor and all is well.

  9. Pwigle says:

Hi Erik, just tested it and it does work. After saving the text into notepad to a file called (e.g.) "test.reg" just double-click that file and confirm. There is no need to import from the registry editor.

  10. Lawrence says:

This "fix" allows me to open and browse folders, but now (almost) all programs crash when I try to "Save As"

The only exception I've found is that Notepad appears not to be affected (I am able to create and save new notepad files).

    Any thoughts on this issue?

  11. Pwigle says:

Hi Lawrence, can you share some details from the event viewer (if possible to access) on why explorer.exe crashed?

  12. Chuck says:

This is not an issue in Windows 8. I hope this issue is fixed in the final release of 8.1.

  13. Anthony says:

Thanks so much! Ii can finally access "This PC" now. Thanks!

  14. Wasay says:

Thanks, but I remember following the same steps two weeks back, and last Friday it all started over, totally forgot about this fix after I applied it. Bookmarking this page just in case the issue reappears.

  15. Jesse says:

Pops up with: Cannot import *File Location*Explorer.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor. Help?

  16. Tripod says:

I had a DLNA device attached to the network and I disabled the DLNA sharing and that took care of the issue for me. Thanks Devid!

  17. Steve says:

This worked for me too. Thanks very much.

  18. RJans says:

    Chozan:
    1) Open notepad
    2) Copy and paste this text:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionShell ExtensionsBlocked]
    “{289AF617-1CC3-42A6-926C-E6A863F0E3BA}”=””

    3) In notepad, save this as “import.reg” (including the quotation marks ” “) on e.g. your desktop.
    4) Doubleclick the import.reg on your desktop.
    5) Accept the warning.

  23. Chozan says:

Pieter… Thanks for the reply.. I tried it… i tried it and it kind of worked last night and it’s happening again today. Could it be the virus problem?

  24. Pieter says:

Chozan: It’s possible but unlikely a virus. Are you running Windows 8.1 or 8.1 Preview?

  30. thisDoesNOTWork says:

This does NOT work. It has nothing to do with the problem. The cause of the problem can vary system to system and so will the solution. I think the dev team should answer this and release some patch as it is affecting a whole lot of users !

  31. Mike V says:
