On the road, again.

Well, I was traveling way too much yesterday and I am in class this week so I am going to cheat a little and post some FAQ questions that I have compiled.  Some of these may not be interesting to you , but some may.

Q:  Are there any problems with doing an ADPREP after doing a Forestprep?

A:  Not if you do the Exchange 2000 ForestPrep before doing the Windows 2003 ADPrep.  The problem known as “mangled attributes” occurs when you do the Exchange 2000 ForestPrep after the Windows 2003 schema extensions.  See the following for more info: https://support.microsoft.com/?id=314649

Q:  My customer is using the following SAN solution (enter any company’s name here).  Is this hardware supported with Exchange 2003?

A: Generally, if it is on the WHCL at https://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/search.mspx then it is supported.

Q:  Can I run Exchange 2003 on a NAS device?

A:  No, not currently.  If this changes in the future the following article will be updated: 317173 XADM: Exchange 2000 Server and Network-Attached Storage

https://support.microsoft.com/?id=317173

Q: My customer installed Exchange 2003 Beta in production and now wants to upgrade to the full version.  What do you recommend as the supported way to do this?

A: Officially, they need to remove the Beta software and tear down their Organization and start over.

Q: My customer has installed the trial version of the final Exchange 2003 and would like to upgrade to a full non-timed-out version.  What do you recommend as the supported way to do this?

A: Do an upgrade with the Full version CD.

Q:  What do I need to install in order for my mobile devices to use Exchange 2003?

A:  Exchange ActiveSync is enabled by default and this will work for your Pocket PCs and Smartphones.  OMA is disabled by default but can be turned on without any additional installation required.  OMA is used by “dumb” phone browsers.  You can enable it on an Organization level and disable at a user level.

Q:  Can I go native mode Exchange 2003 and still have an Exchange 2000 IM server?

A:  No, you can not go native mode until all Exchange 2000 servers are out of your Organization.

Q:  How do I migrate from my POP3/IMAP (Sendmail, IPlanet, etc…) system to Exchange 2003?

A:  Use the Migration wizard.  It is a very simple and straightforward process that is covered very well in the help file.

Q:  Where can I find a list of all the schema changes in Exchange 2003?

Ahttps://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/e2k3/e2k3/e2k3_ldf_AD_Schema_intro.asp

Q:  What is the maximum number of processors and the maximum amount of Memory Exchange can use in Exchange 2003 Enterprise edition?

A:  Exchange scales well up to 8 processors.  This includes the Hyperthreaded XEON MP processors.  Maximum memory is 4 GB.  Anything more is a waste as far as Exchange is concerned.

Q:  Does Exchange 2003 run on a 64-bit OS?

A:  No.

Q:  If I have Exchange 2000 and I do a ForestPrep for Exchange 2003 will another forest-wide GC rebuild occur?

A:  Not if you have Windows 2003 GCs.  Otherwise the rebuilds will occur on Windows 2000.

More tomorrow...
