Patrick Durusau, der Editor von ISO/IEC 26300 ODF, hat sich vor kurzem zur laufenden Debatte rund um Open XML geäußert. In einem offenen Brief "OpenXML: A Poster Child for Open Standards Development?" zeigt er sich zum Beispiel mehr als verwundert bezüglich mancher Angriffe auf Open XML. Patrick Durusau meint zum Beispiel explizit, dass Open XML sogar ein Musterbeispiel für offene Standards abgibt.

Ein kurzer Auszug:

I have seen some attacks on OpenXML saying it is not an "open" standard. I am quite puzzled by those attacks and think that OpenXML makes the case for open development of standards.
Understand that as the Project Editor for ISO/IEC 26300 and the OpenDocument Format TC editor in OASIS, I carry no brief for OpenXML. However, a well defined and publicly controlled OpenXML would be a great benefit for future work on the OpenDocument Format standard so I have no reason to wish it ill.

und weiter zum Thema Offenheit:

OpenXML has progressed from being developed in a closed environment to being handed over to approximately 70% of the world's population for future development so I am missing the "not open" aspect of OpenXML. If anything, the improvements made to OpenXML during that process make it a poster child for the open standards development process.

Herr Durusau macht dann anhand einiger Punkte fest, warum für ihn Open XML ein Musterbeispiel an offener Standard Entwicklung darstellt, und welche Vorteile Open XML seiner Meinung nach bringt. Besonders hervorhebenswert ist hier nochmals, dass Patrick Durusau als Editor eng an der Entwicklung des ursprünglichen ODF Formats mitgearbeitet hat. Er weiß also wovon er spricht.

Aber es gibt andere, die wollen halt Open XML unbedingt verteufeln. Egal wie offen der Standard ist, und egal wie offen die Weiterentwicklung erfolgt. Hauptsache man ist dagegen. Auch wenn Open XML in der Zwischenzeit große Fortschritte gemacht hat. 

Herrn Durusaus conclusio zu Open XML hingegen:

The OpenXML project has made a large amount of progress in terms of the openness of its development. Objections that do not recognize that are focusing on what they want to see and not what is actually happening with OpenXML.

Diesem Satz ist an sich nichts mehr hinzuzufügen.
