Service Manager 2012 Console hangs or crashes constantly

I ran across this where a Service Manager installation on just a few systems would hang constantly and the computer at that point would be unusable.  Once you closed the Service Manager console the system would be back to normal.  Through troubleshooting found that it was the WPF Font Cache that was causing the problem.  Worth a shot if you have consoles that are constantly hanging or crashing on certain systems.  In services.msc its called Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache or the actual service name is FontCache3.0.0.0.

Stop the service and navigate to C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local and delete the FontCache3.0.0.0.dat file.  Once complete start the service back up and launch your console.  If it was the FontCache causing your problem then your console should run great.

  1. By putting the service in manual mode or stopping it you could cause degradation to applications that leverage WPF, while this would stop the problem, it could cause others down the road, keep in mine Service Manager does use WPF, but many other applications do as well.

  2. MMI, is the service running, if the service is no longer running it will not be caching the WPF application fonts anymore. Can you confirm that this is not the case?

Very nice find! has a similar issues on one of our users machines, went to reinstall the console and found the installation hanging as well!
Clearing the cache resolved the issue!

Brilliant, that fixed our problem too. The console just hung all the time, uninstalled it and they couldn’t reinstall it as it just hung. After doing the font cache trick we were able to reinstall and it worked like a dream. Thank you so much! 🙂

Better you put this service in Manual Mode and keep the same stopped.

I’ve cleared the cache before and may need to do it again. However the specified location no longer show "FontCache3.0.0.0.dat" file. What should I do?
