Fix Print Spooler

clip_image002Fix printing problems by resetting the print spooler

Fix it for me

This Fix it Solution automates resetting the Print Spooler on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.

The Fix it has two modes: Light and Full.  The light mode will make changes to the spooler that should not require the end user to make any changes.  The full mode will restore the print spooler to defaults and require a reinstall of printers.

    Peter,

Had same problems as described, and tried these and other suggested solution with no job.

Symption: Spooler problem manifested and executed MS Fixit for me solution with no success.  All other USB devices worked, except USB printer would NOT be recognized.

Finally succeeded by removing "USB Printing Support" driver from Control Panel>System>HArdware>Device Manager>Universal Serial Bus Controllers.  Reboot and let system automatically reinstall USB Printing Support by itself. Took 2 tried for me, since 1st reinstall was corrupted somehow, but finally worked!

Good luck.  I was on the brink of the dreaded reinstallation of XP from scratch.

Fix it has not done the job for me.

I’m running XP windows. As I’m running

the  fix it program I get an error message

    that states "Malicious Script Detection"

    file Msiexec.exe

After this error message appears I try to override twice, then it comes back to say

that fix it was unable to finish.

I wrote on this blog yesturday and I still

    haven’t heard from you guys.

    Thank you for reading….

Spoke too soon! (see above post) Using Vista Ultimate, ran this fix, I rebooted, added the printers and it was fixed. User shut down for the night, when it came back up the print spooler problem was back.  If you have a solution: Please post! Now my user hates Vista and we are looking for an alternative OS. I’ve already invested TOO many hours in this problem!

I just used this yesterday on a neighbor's printer which had jobs stuck in the queue and had too many windows open to reboot:))

It is such a pleasure to hear that the Fixit Team has been moved back to Charlotte where it started, congratulations to all the folks who helped build this incredible program.  Fixit still comes up in conversations and people love it.  hurray and congrats folks!

A restart failed to fix the problem (no printers listed) but once I used the ‘Fix it’ tool all was fine- printers miraculously reappeared!

Is this a permanent fix or will I have to constantly apply it?!

  13. Bert says:

A brief history.  I hope it is accurate.

    1.  I tried to install a printer on my computer at a new job.  It was not successful and I got a printer spooler error.

    2.  My printer at home stopped working.

    3.  I deleted all printer drivers per a suggestion somewhere and then started getting "The RPC server is unavailable" when turning computer on.

    4. Tried to turn print spooler on – got a 1068 error.

    5. I ran the FixPrintSpooler.msi and it failed to process and had a link to this blog.

    6.  I came to this blog saw what appeared to be a link to an improved fix (fix-print-spooler.aspx) and it just reloads this blog page.

PS My printer is also a scanner, copier, and fax.  The other day I could not send a fax.  thsi may or may not be related.

I have spent hours & hours trying to fix my "printer spooler service in not running" issue. I have blogged, went to tech sites, had long tech chat emails, very long, spent time in the registry (very scary place for a new-b to be!)…tried everything they suggested, nothing worked! Tonight I STUMBELED into the Fix It, used it and I can print for the 1st time in over a month…did I mention long chats? THANK YOU!!

  22. mick says:

I fix the spooler problem with the Fix. Now my acrobat reader and professional are corrupted. Any ideas how to make this work?

  28. Ian Hutcheson says:

You guys are great. Most grateful.

I found that the "heavy" version was needed

Excellent ! Thanks for saving the day.

Removing Acrobat and defragging created the problem I think.

I was about to give up after complete Epson uninstall (18 processes to do), and restarting print spoiler in Admin Tools, Services, and attemting reinstalling original software from CD left me with no printer installed, (as spoiler stopped itself in mid process each time).

  29. Chris says:

I tried the "fix it" patch. It wiped my printer drivers as expected, I loaded it up, it worked. However, everytime I try printing a pdf it crashes the spooler and I’m at square one all over again, any suggestions?  I’m using Vista Home Premium and the most updated acrobat reader.

  30. Brian says:

Can this tool be scripted to deploy using one of the modes without being prompted?

We have Vista on over 50 machines that have had similar issues, but not these types of error messages.

We have intermittant issues where the completed print job will not clear the queue and then every subsequent print job is delayed by several minutes, if it prints out at all.

I’m thinking it would be nice to use this tool to delete all printers and drivers off the Vista machines and would rather not have to do this manually on each box.

    Thanks.

  31. ioniapcwizard says:

  40. Edward Aho says:

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 Desktop running Windows XP Professional SP3 and a Dell 720 Color photo printer connected via USB port.  My documents print completely but will not clear spooler with status "Deleting – Printed – Printing".  If I turn the printer off for 10 sec and then turn back it back on the document will clear and I can continue printing the next document.  I do not have "Retain documents after printing" selected,  I have tried deleting and reinstalling the printer software and driver numerous times.  I have tried stopping and restarting the spooler.  I have tried deleting files in "C:WindowsSystem32DriversPrinters".  I have tried running the "Fix It" program light and full. Then rebooting the computer and reinstalling the Dell 720 printer software and driver.  I have tried using another USB cable. Nothing I have tried has solved the problem.  Documents continue to remain in spooler que after printing and hold up other print jobs.

Anyone have any other ideas besides changing driver to print directly to printer?

My printer has a document sitting in the print queue with the statius as deleting, the job is 14.6MB. It’s been sitting like this for nearly a week now. I have deleted the printer and re-installed it. I’ve stoped and started the spooler and also checked that there is no files in the spooler folder (I was informed that I should delete these if any and that would clear the queue also), but nothing I do is getting rid of the job and I can’t print anything else.. I have just tried this fix it and i still can’t print. Is there any other way to clear this job? Please help me.

  48. Dustin Cook says:

    Thank you, Fix it Team!

This Fix it (in Full mode) solved a very annoying problem we were having. The Printers and Faxes folder showed that no print jobs were queued and the printer was online. Word and Excel 2007, however, said there were five print jobs and the printer was offline.

Now it’s fixed, and you saved my team a lot of time and effort.

  49. Window stickers says:

Its really easy to utilize and thanks for sharing it.

  50. Resonance says:

    Hi Fix it Team,

I noticed a recent change in the beloved Spooler fix it.

The shotgun rebuild + cleanout of the spooler doesn’t seem to exist anymore.

Had a case this afternoon where we had to wait for the Powershell+MSXML+activeX controls to isntall , only to find the tool was just shy of solving the spooler service issue.

The old fashioned cleanout of the spooler solved the issue. From experience I can tell you it’s almost always going to resolve print spooler subsystem issues. (Except for Win7 and it’s nifty change to print spooler)

The proposal is a bit shotgun I know , but is there a chance you can provide an option under the let me choose section , to have a rebuild the spooler from scratch button.

Disclaimer about having the required drivers etc of course :).

If you need more details , please shout ?

  51. JK Sullivan says:

I started getting this on Windows 7 Ultimate, full build – however, it ONLY occurs when I am trying to print a PDF from Adobe Reader (I have version 9.3 installed).  Other apps printed fine.  I really need the PDF, so I had it print to an .xps doc, and then printed that and it worked fine.  Wondering how many of the other people who can’t use the easy fix are having issues with PDFs?  Seems like at least a few in my various searches.  Perhaps the issue is with Adobe, and not Microsoft?

  52. aadithya says:

good. this is useful.i was able to fix the spooler. but will this create a problem in future?

  53. Cas says:

I was unable to use the fix it for me conponent as I do not have windows 7, however, the fix it yourself section was easy to understand and follow and fixed my print spooler problem instantly as opposed to the previous hour trying other suggested solutions to the problem. Will definitely come back here FIRST, next time I have a problem.

  54. Kevin says:

I am having a problem printing in Excel 2007. I have files that were created i v2003 and printed fine. When I open in v2007 the print range are still the same and when I go to print it only does the first 90-100 rows and then stops.

When I print preview I only get on the screen the first 90-100 rows and then stops.

    I cannot figure this out.

  55. Brian says:

Why is this fix not available for XP anymore?

  56. Les says:

All the Fix Print Spooler does is start it.  It immediately stops again.  Not much benefit in the Fix Print Spooler.  Is there any real solution?  I have Vista.

  57. whatdoesitwant says:

Just to verify JK Sullivan. After upgrading Adobe Reader from 9.1 to 9.3 it hangs/crashes when trying to print. Windows 7 Ultimate 64. Files print fine from a setup with the 9.1 version.

  58. Wim says:

    I had simular problems

    .

Don’t know why but after every once in a while some win updates or after installing certain programs, the printspooler crashes. The cause is there is an addon (http) to the  DependOnService value of the printspooler, this causes the problem the printspooler stops or printers disappear.

In windows 7 do the following:

Click on Windows 7 (Start) button, and type Regedit.exe in search bar

    Navigate to the following branch

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services Spooler

In the right-pane, double-click the DependOnService value

Delete the existing data, and then type RPCSS (remote procedure call)

    Close Regedit.exe

    Restart the computer.

    This will solve your problem.

Seconding Brian’s comment 29 Jan. Some of us still run XP. Surely it doesn’t cost anything to keep the fix available for it?

Reading this blog, it’s clear this fixit is the only thing which can kick-start a print spooler which has suddenly apparently ceased to exist, like mine. I’m not a teccie so sorting out registry is not for me.

Anyway if this has been a recurrent problem with your software, Messrs Microsoft, why haven’t you fixed it properly years ago?

Do you guys by chance have an HP 1020 or 1022 printer as well? ran into this problem on 2 computers this week that upgraded Adobe and had this printer installed.

One was running XP Pro, and the other Win 7 Home Premium.

Seems that Reader and the HP printers don’t play nice, as an internet search will show a lot of problems with these, but not a lot of solutions…

I tried the automatic "fix it for me" and nothing was repaired. I was told they couldn't detect the problem though I got a message when I tried to put the pc on standby after my printer had jammed and wouldn't print anything I was working on. I shut off the printer and tried to put the pc on standby. I received the message that the Print Spooler was preventing the machine from entering standby mode.

So now what can I do to make the printer work? I removed the jammed paper. At the time I was trying to print something I had only one sheet of cardstock in the printer and have done this many times previously with no problems.

When we tried to reinstall it, it says either that we don't have a printer plugged in (when we do) and when it doesn't do that, it says to start up the print spooler. We looked around, and the spooler program is no longer installed. It cannot be found anywhere. We are running an up to date Windows XP computer.

  94. Dan says:

The other day I tried to print a file and got the print spooler stopped msg, did my best to follow all the great tips here, updated to Win service pak 3 so I could run fix-it.  Didn't help, my spooler stopped itself before fix-it got very far and fix-it said I needed to restart my print spooler to fix the problem.  I restarted the spooler manually and ran fix-it again and it said I have no printer installed.  But of course I can not install a printer because the install software says my print spooler isn't running.  I restart spooler again manually, try to install the printer again and the spooler stops itself, and my printer install software says the spooler isn't running again.  Can't tell you how frustrating this is.

    Any suggestions?

Fixing a Print spool problem on Windows XP

I encountered a problem with adding a printer after removing an old printer and the spooler service would not start. After a many hours of searches and fixes that did not work I came up with a solution that solved the issue. Here is the fix to my problem:

    1. Make sure C: windows/system32/spoolsv.exe  file is there

    2. Check Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance>Administrative tools>Services for Print Spooler

    a. If it is there then you are ok

    b. Proceed if it is not there

    3. Run Regedit.exe to check the registry

    4. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServices

    a. Check for the Spooler folder in the tree

    b. If it is not there you need to import a copy from another computer or your original registry backup under the Services folder

    5. Restart your computer

    6. Print Spooler should show up in the services list again

    7. Try adding a printer. It will work.

  113. Asa Mangham says:

I am getting this error message. "The Service 'Print Spooler' is prevcenting the machine from entering standby. Try stopping the service and try again." Does anybody know how to resolve this?

my windows 7 PC keeps shutting down my network printer. for a while stopping and starting the spool-er service fixed this temporarily, but now even that does not work. I have a network, Minolta printer that previously worked fine on this PC, and works fine on three identical PCs in the same office.

Minolta has come out and was unable to fix this problem. Several reboots and re installs have not solved it either.
