    Hello Sobi,

Thanks for providing the above information. However, to determine what service the Print Spooler is dependent on to start we will need the output from the following command.

"sc qc spooler" (without the quotes)

    Thanks,

    Christie,

There does not normally appear to be a way to remove Spooler. That’s the reason the Fix it did not restart the service; it did not exist.

The missing registry entries are suspect. It would be prudent to ensure your machine is not hosting some malware or the like. Microsoft’s online scan is here: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm.

If you are still unable to get the spooler service installed please use the "Get help now" link that is at the top of every KB article. This will help you discover the best support option for you to get your issue resolved.

If Spooler won’t run at all, it may be crashing each time it tries to start.

    1.  Open Problem Reports and Solutions by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Problem Reports and Solutions.

    2.  In the left pane, click View problem history.

    3.  Double-click the problem that you want to view.

I am not sure how the spooler services were removed from the Service Control Manager (SCM). SCM is the one reporting the spooler service is not installed.

That said, there is not an easy way to get it back installed.

If you can, please run the two following commands. These will dump some text to a file on your desktop. Then mail the file to fixit4me@microsoft.com.

    reg query hklmSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesSpooler /s >> %userprofile%desktopspooler.txt

    reg query hklmSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlPrint /s  >> %userprofile%desktopspooler.txt

It seems that I also have this issue and have tried the many fixes suggested in these comments however I’m still unable to resolve the issue.  I’m running XP Pro and had four printers networked which all have disappeared and when I click on ‘Add Printer’ or view the server properties I get the same error message.  I ran “sc queryex spooler >> spooler.txt” but I do not know what I’m looking for to have it any use to me.  What else could I do to restore the print spooler?

    Greetings Tim,

Thank you for taking the time to post a comment.

When you mentioned "it failed", do you mean the Fix it failed to run or it failed to resolve your issue?

If the Fix it failed to run can you provide any error messages or details about the failue? If the Fix it ran but didn’t resolve your issue are you having the same issue that is described in Knowledge Base article 314876 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314876)? The Fix it is only designed to resolve the issue described in 314876 so if you are having a different issue the Fix it won’t resolve it.

If you are having the issue described in 314876 can you plese run the following command based on your operating system?

Since you are running Windows XP please open a command prompt.

You may do this by selecting Start > All Programs > Accessories and selecting Command Prompt.

In the command prompt type "sc qc spooler" (without the quotes).

Now type "sc start spooler" (without the quotes).

Please let us now what the exact output and/or error messages are.

    Sincerely,

3rd party printer drivers are crashing spooler. Uninstall all 3rd partying print drivers. That should show us spooler working.

Then you can check for drivers from the manufacturer.

    Vijay,

I suspect that your Lexmark printer software is preventing spooler from starting. For a test, let’s remove the dependency Lexmark put in spooler and set spooler back to defaults.

Run the following commands in a command prompt.

     Sc config spooler depend= rpcss

     Sc start spooler

If this starts spooler for you I recommend you go to Lexmark’s site and install the latest driver for your model printer. Or you could uninstall the Lexmark software, but I don’t know how that would affect your ability to print.

One more thing to try. This following command assumes the OS is installed in c:windows. Also note the space after the equals sign.

    Use this, without the quotes.

    “sc create spooler binPath= %systemroot%system32spoolsv.exe start= auto”

    Sobi,

It does concern me that something appears to be removing your spooler service.

Before reinstalling you could try a free virus scan. Microsoft’s is here: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm.

You might have some known issue that could be cleared up this way. If not, a reinstall might be the next step.

    Sobi,

If the sc qc and queryex commands  on spooler failed with that error it sounds like the Spooler service is missing. Which it was missing before.

So, let’s try to create the spooler service again.

    "sc create spooler binPath= %systemroot%system32spoolsv.exe start= auto"

Please note that there is a space between the equals mark and the part following it. That is needed.

Then, if successful, run "sc qc spooler" and "sc queryex spooler"  and let us know what it finds.

  64. Kim says:

    The error message reads:

Print spooler sub app has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Then it closes the entire program…

    The "fix" above didn’t work.

    Any suggestions?

  65. Jeff says:

The "Fix It" program did not work for me. I still get the same error messge "the printer spooler service is not running."

  66. slight says:

    Christie,

I was not able to do all the research I needed to from home. I will research this further tomorrow morning.

  67. Christie says:

Steve I’m thinking that doing a repair may be the quickest solution to bring my system back to as normal as can be so that I can install printers again?

… or is there a simpler way to add the print spool services? I see the printers are listed in the registry with some spool services.

I’d like to prevent a parallel installation if at all possible.

    Thanks!

    Christie

  68. Christie says:

hmmm nothing got dumped to a .txt file on my desktop Steve 🙁  Query was executed but found neither.

  69. Christie says:

Thanks Steve your last comment did the trick.

My system is checked at least once a day for any malware and fortunately has been consistently free of all viruses.  I have no clue as to how the print spooler got removed. All I know is after windows updated my system I couldn’t print.

    Now I can. Thank You!

    Christie

  70. slight says:

    Christie,

I am glad that we were able to get it fixed. I appreciate all your work on this with me.

  97. Paula says:

I have used fix it to "restart" sprint spooler.

I am using XP Pro OS

I have tried starting print spooler manually.  It starts amd say Stop service Restart Service.  When I go to install printers no printers show and it gives me a error message when I add printer.

"operation can not be completed. print spooler is not running"

Up to this print I had 3 printers running on this computer.  HP Laserjet, Brother Multi Fax, Start recipt printer.  None of them are or have been a lexmark.

  98. Linda o'Donnell says:

I have a problem printing.  My computer runs on Vista Home Premium.  I went to print and it showed no printers.  I have run the option under Print Spooler Properties and have had to start it but it keeps on stopping.  I have tried running you "Fix It" option also and while it started it it stopped again.

  99. Linda o'Donnell says:

Just thought I should give you the error message – once I have started it and then it stops again it gives me the message – Spooler Subsystem App stopped working and was closed.  A Problem caused the application to stop working correctly.  Windows will notify you if a solution is available.

  100. hazel says:

i also did not work for me. i still get the same message when i click add a printer. it says "operation could not be completed." what will i do? i cannot add a printer to my laptop.

  101. G Bhaam says:

    Hi,

Can you please try to help me.  I’m getting the error message "Spooler SubSystem App has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience."

If I then try to print, I get an error message "Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running."  It won’t let me instal printers.  I did have an HP Printer installed and it worked fine, but not any more.

I’m running on Windows XP Home and I’ve tried all the suggestions on the blog so far.  I’ve also completed the free virus scan and it says there are no viruses.

If I put ‘net start spooler’ at the command prompt, it says ‘The Print Spooler service is starting.’ followed by ‘The Print Spooler service was started successfully.’  If I then try to print it says I need to instal a printer and then if I say yes to that it says: ‘Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running.’

If I run the Fix It tool to Restart Print Spooler, it goes through and says ‘Restart Print Spooler "Fix It" has been processed.’ but still won’t let me print.

If I put ‘sc qc spooler’ at the command prompt, I get the following:

    [SC] GetServiceConfig SUCCESS

    SERVICE_NAME: spooler

I have a similar issue.  The spoolsrv is running in the task manager but does not exist under services.  I get critical errors regarding the spoolsrv.exe and it shuts down.  I see this in the eventvwr and it calls it a application error.  Also I get an error something about the spooler subsystem application failing.  I did have the braviax malware on here but got rid of it.  But it seems to have done some damage already or so I guess since there is obviously an error still present after a reboot.  Is there any way to protect from getting this in the future?  I have Trend Micro on our server, I would think that would protect me.  Should I run Malwarebytes daily?  Thanks.  email me asap at phil@jasonwray.net, thanks.

Nothing of Microsoft is worth a damn since they changed operating systems after Win98SE. XP-Home sucks and from what I’ve heard Vista is worse. Crap, crap, crap! I wish Microsoft would reestablish support for Win98SE; I’d uninstall xp in a second with its 20 minute bootup time. And a scan dish that hangs almost all the time.

After using Microsoft fix it for the none running print spooler I attempted to install the Xerox xp_workcentreXK series driver. All files were extracted then "Operation could not be completed Print Spooler is not running" Window appeared again.

You should be able to run the following commands in an elevated command prompt to resolve your issue.

    "sc config spooler depend= RPCSS"

    Then,

    "sc start spooler"

You do NOT need the quotes. And there IS a space after the equals sign.

    /Steve

My problem is, that the Print Spooler sometimes stopped without any reasons or any error messages. After that I can start it manually always. My question is that the Fix It resolve the problem of stopping or restart the spooler only.
