The SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates scans client computers for updates based on the Windows Update Catalog used by Windows Server Update Services. This scan tool, which released August 2005, supports security-related updates and Office Updates, rollups, and service packs.
The change in supported products has meant a change to the Distribute Software Updates Wizard when it detects that you have selected an update which has related updates. For example, Office service pack updates are not released in one update but as multiple updates so that they can be shared across products within the Office suite. Until all the updates in that service pack are installed, the service pack is not considered installed.
When the Distribute Software Updates Wizard detects an update that has related updates, it will warn you with a dialog box offering to automatically select all the related updates. However, once you return to the wizard, these automatically-selected updates can be deselected, if necessary. For example, if you know clients already have or do not need specific related updates, you can deselect them if you want to streamline your update package.
