Time to go PST hunting with the new PST Capture 2.0

Ahoy, Exchange Ninjas! It’s time to buckle up and go PST hunting again with the new PST Capture 2.0!

Earlier this week, we released a brand new version of the free PST Capture tool that allows you to hunt down PST files on client computers across your network. After it finds PST files on users’ computers, the tool consolidates the PST files to a central location, and then easily injects PST data to primary or archive mailboxes on your on-premises Exchange Servers or Exchange Online.

What’s new in PST Capture 2.0?

PST Capture 2.0 includes the following improvements:

  • Support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2013
  • Updated profile generation code to use Outlook Anywhere (RPC over HTTP).
  • Fixed Exchange Online import failure issue when PST Capture is not installed on an Exchange server.
  • Removed User Interface limit of 1,000 users when performing an import to Exchange Online.
  • General performance improvements

Download PST Capture 2.0 from the Download Center (aka.ms/getpstcapture), check out the PST Capture documentation (aka.ms/pstcapture) and then go get those PSTs!

    Good one.. with some improvements.

  2. Gulab says:

Nice, was looking forward for it.

    Right on time :)

  3. john@golgotha.org.uk says:

Looking at the System Requirements, it lists Windows Vista and Windows 7 as supported operating systems. How about Windows 8?

  4. Vegas says:

If we have version 1.0 installed, can we install this over that installation and still keep all of our previous settings or will the install overwrite everything?

  5. Bort says:

Where is the 32bit agent?? the one in the download link is 64bit only.

  6. ankur@kothari.me says:

@John C. Kirk – Windows 8 is supported.  We'll update that note soon enough.

@Bort – Also going to republish the 32bit agent shortly!

  7. Hi All,

No big news, just that Exchange 2013 is supported now, and some minor Fixes.

Upgrade from previous Version not possible, you must uninstall PST Capture Server 1.0 and Install PST Capture Server 2.0. But the Data will be keept.

PST Capture Agent also tested on Windows 8 x64 – successfully scanned for PST.

I was not able to Install PST Capture Agent on Vista x86 (Plattform not supportet). No Problem on Vista x64.

But the great news is – PST Capture Server 2.0 is able to communicate with PST Capture Agent 1.0

    blog.icewolf.ch/…/microsoft-introduces-pst-capture.aspx

But there are some missing Features:

    – No PST Scan on Shares. What about the HomeShare? Install PST CaptureFileserver on Fileserver? But what wenn you use NetApp, where it's not possible to install Software? Thought this was an Enterprise Product ;)

    – The PST's will not be deleted or marked as ReadOnly after the Import. The Data is on Exchange, but the User is still able to work with the PST.

    – The PST will not be removed from the Outlook Profile. Why there is an Agent, that can do such things?

    Regards Andres

  14. CharlesComputers says:

Just tried installing the x86 version on at least three different Win 7 Pro 32-bit machines. Cannot get past the install process when it starts services…

"Service 'Microsoft Exchange PST Capture Agent Service' (MSExchangePSTCaptureAgent) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

If I go into 'services.msc' console and manually try to 'Start' the service manually I get another error that starting the service timed out when starting.

User was a domain administrator and/or local administrator with full privileges. PC was 7 Pro Sp1 32-bit with PowerShell 3.0, .NET 4.5, etc. Rebooted PC for good measure as well and ran latest updates.

Anyone else having problems installing the x86 version?

  15. Sylvain says:

exact same for me Win 7 sp1 x86 with .,net 4.5 and powershell 3.0

service fails to start right after install completion
