Over a 20 year veteran of the software industry, Jim Kleewein has spent most of his life designing and building relational database systems. In the database domain he worked on pretty much every aspect of database systems, from low level synchronization and coherency mechanisms, to query optimizers, to bioinformatics systems and geospatial information systems. He was even rash enough to agree to manage for a while, eventually amassing an empire of hundreds of people, before going back to his purely technical roots. While in the wild grip of a mid-life crisis he decided a career change was necessary and decided to make a jump outside databases and focus on e-mail and communications systems instead. He is currently an Architect in Exchange looking primarily at longer term futures and disruptive technologies, while dealing with the greatest disruptive technology ever – being a father.
