What does it take to install admin only?

When all the prerequisites are met, installing the Exchange System Management component is quick and painless.  However, due to seemingly continuous changes in the OS, the prerequisites can be different between each version of the OS and each service pack.   As far as Exchange is concerned our underlying dependencies have remained the same, but what you need to install to get them has changed.  Here is the breakdown of admin only prerequisites by OS and SP for Exchange 2003.

Windows XP SP1:

·     Internet Information Services Snap-In component (In Add/Remove Programs)

·     SMTP Service component (In Add/Remove Programs)

·     WWW Service component (SMTP requires this)

·     Disable WWW and SMTP services after installation (we only need the smtp snap-in)

·     Windows 2003 AdminPack (provides NNTP snap-in and ADUC snap-in)

Windows XP SP2:

·   Internet Information Services Snap-In component (In Add/Remove Programs).  Installing the SMTP service is no longer necessary, in SP2 the IIS Snap-In component installs the SMTP snap-in as well)

·     Windows 2003 Server AdminPak (provides NNTP and ADUC snap-ins)

Windows Server 2003:

·     Internet Information Services Manager component (In Add/Remove Programs).  In Windows 2003, the IIS  Manager component includes the SMTP snap-in.

Windows 2000 Professional SP3

·     Internet Information Services Snap-In component (In Add/Remove Programs)

·     Windows 2000 Server AdminPack (provides SMTP snap-in, NNTP snap-in and ADUC snap-in)

Windows 2000 Server SP3

·     Internet Information Services Snap-In component (In Add/Remove Programs)

·     SMTP Service component (In Add/Remove Programs)

·     NNTP Service component (In Add/Remove Programs)

·     Disable WWW, NNTP, and SMTP services after installation (we need the smtp and nntp snap-ins)

Decide the product name already! It’s been released for over a year!

According to the logon screen, it’s "Windows Server 2003".

I fixed it Mike, thanks for pointing it out. We’re not marketing types and we called it .net server and win2003 for years before they changed the name, old habits die hard =)

  4. What about requirements for upgrading the Admin Tools from 2003 to 2003 SP1? I’ve run into a problem where the SP1 setup program won’t update admin tools installed on XP, complaining that it can’t install the server components as well.

I too have been unable to get E2k3 SP1 to install on my administrative workstation that has ESM only…Does it require XP SP2?
