Update installation wizard dialog might be hidden by Windows EBS installation wizard

Sometimes, you will see that Windows EBS installation wizard appears to hang and some updates are not showing any progress. For example, the Windows EBS installation wizard will show “Installing…” while the “Internet Explorer 8 for Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition” update has no progress at all.

A simple trick could help you work around it very easily. You drag the Windows EBS Installation Wizard and move it to the corner of current desktop. Then you will see the reason why the installation has paused.

The reason for the pause is that the “Internet Explorer 8 for Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition” has displayed a dialog which is completely hidden by the Windows EBS installation wizard and it is waiting for user input. That’s why Windows EBS installation wizard seems to be hanging. It is waiting for the installation of Internet Explorer 8 to complete.

The same experience may also happen to “Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2”, as shown in the following screenshot. You can use the same workaround above to find and fix the problem so the Windows EBS Installation Wizard can continue the installation.

Similar behavior will be seen with Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP2 for x64-based Systems (KB972455) [also known as WSUS SP2].
