Microsoft Update Opt-In failed error on EBS 2008 installations.

[Today's post comes to us courtesy of Chris Puckett]

During the installation of each of the EBS 2008 servers, you will have two update phases, one is required and the other one depends on whether you select the option “Download and install optional Microsoft updates during installation” or not. But you may not receive the most recent updates from Microsoft Update in two update phases.

· Critical-level security updates and other necessary updates from Windows Update will still be installed.

· Updates from Microsoft Update will not be installed. This includes EBS 2008, SCE 2007, Exchange 2007 and TMG-MBE specific updates, etc.

· You will not receive any visual indication during setup that updates from Microsoft Update were not installed.

How to keep your EBS up to date:

By default, after EBS 2008 is installed completely, EBS servers will get updates from Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) managed by your system administrator. It depends on the updates available on the local WSUS server.

If you want to use Microsoft Updates for EBS servers, you can manually opt-in to Microsoft Updates via https://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate
