  3. Anonymous says:

Worked like a charm after 5 or more failures without it! Thanks!

  4. Anonymous says:

I tried it and still go the error. I will try again now. Surface Pro 3

  5. Anonymous says:

Worked for me on i7, Asus x99-A system, thanks!

  7. Anonymous says:

It comes back to the empty line pretty quick for me, Is that normal?

  8. Anonymous says:

I’m running on a ThinkPad X1 Carbon and this resolved my issue too. Thanks!

  9. Anonymous says:

Yeah it took me 3 tries as well. But all is good now.

  10. Attempted it twice and it still errors out at 18% and restores old build. On a Surface Pro 3.

  11. Anonymous says:

This did not work for me at first. HOWEVER, I switched to the Slow ring, updated everything and rebooted. Then, switched to the Fast ring, and while 10112 was both downloading and installing, I did the psexec rundll thing every 30 seconds, and also switched
all network adapters off. FINALLY it updated. SP3 i7 256.

  12. Awesome, this did the trick for me 🙂

  13. Anonymous says:

    Hi

Worked Perfect as posted. Thanks so much.

  14. Anonymous says:

This really worked for me on first try.

Thanks alot!! U r a genius (not like Einstein thou, but close)

  15. Anonymous says:

    This worked for me!

  16. Anonymous says:

After the third attempt, this finally worked for me. Vdesk’s comment (page 2 of comments here) led me in the right direction. I’ve detailed how the three attempts panned out in order to get it to work on page 26 here:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_install/surface-pro-3-wont-upgrade-to-build-10122-from/f6ec9dc6-06d9-4621-be0d-74b7da157720?page=26.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but during the third (and successful) attempt, I ran the pnpclean fix when the "preparing to install" phase hit 95% – moments before the prompt to reboot appeared…

  17. Anonymous says:

Hooray! This fixed my problem. I had also done all the previous fixes, though, so anyone who is still having trouble may want to go through them all.

  18. Anonymous says:

    Not working on SP3 i7 512GB

  19. Anonymous says:

Surface Pro 3 i7 x64 OS Build 10074 to 10122 this worked successfully for me too.

  20. Anonymous says:

Superb, worked for me on my SP3 i7 512GB. THANKS!

  21. Anonymous says:

Worked for me on an SP3 i5/8/256. On the second try I ran the pnpclean again, right after the update installed the May 15 update. Ran really slow to do the upgrade. But the device seems to be running at normal speed. Thanks a lot!

  22. Anonymous says:

This solved it for me on Surface Pro 2. Thanks!!

  23. Anonymous says:

It took two tries running the procedure, but worked great on a Dell Venue 11 Pro i3. Many thanks.

  24. Anonymous says:

Seems to have worked for me on the SP3 i7 256GB. THANKS!

  25. Anonymous says:

This solution worked fine …… totally agree with your comments well done.

Attempted the Andre Da Costa solution this didn’t work for me with commands
    ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
    ren C:WindowsSystem32catroot2 catroot2.old
causing additional problems if they were in existence from a previous upgrade attempt

  26. Joshua Manning says:

This worked perfectly, thank you so much!

  27. Anathorn says:

I get an error pop-up when executing the last command: Error in pnpclean.dll. Missing Entry: rundll_pnpclean

  36. reggie2 says:

Solved my issue on my Dell XPS 15. Thanks. Worked like a charm.

I have tried it and it did not work. I see that Pepper states that there were several failed attempts, so I am trying again.

  38. vdesk says:

Did NOT work for me (SP3 i7 256). Also seems to trigger the re-install of the system patch from may 14th…

  39. Dean says:

Anathorn, That happened to me, too. Check that you type second command exactly as it appears.

    This worked. Thank you, OP.

  40. David says:

    Worked!! Thank you so much!

  41. Jason says:

I can’t get the first command to work. Any ideas?

  42. c1mullins says:

  43. tom says:

I tried twice but it didn’t work for me. 🙁
    SP3/I5/128

  44. Diane says:

Did not work for me. Went from hang at 18%, to reverting to previous install (10074). Error code 0x80070057-0x20007. SP3 i5/8/256. I’ll give it one more try.

  45. blake says:

When I do the final command, is there supposed to be some sort of feedback that it worked? I just hit enter and then it goes back to system32 command line…

  46. Todd says:

Finally! Thank you very much!!! SP3 i5 256

  47. Eric says:

    Worked. thanks.

  48. JesseC says:

I didnt’ get an error during the preparation for install like I did previously, but it got stuck again at 18% upgrading from 10074 – 0x80070057 on my SP3 i7/8/256

  49. John says:

I tried it again and I am now over 35% into installing it. Looks like this might be a winner! Thanks!

  50. Brad Nelson says:

Worked great on Surface Pro 3

  51. vdesk says:

    Update: it finally worked for me (SP3 / i7 / 256).

The first time I tried, it failed. However, I noticed that it re-installed the system update from may 14th before retrying to install 10122. I don’t know if that was the issue. However, I tried again but this time I re-ran the pnpclean command after it updated
the may 14th update and a few times while it was preparing to install the 10122 update. Then it worked. I have not idea if it’s relevant or just a coincidence, but I am posting it in case it might help someone.

    Tips:

    – Make sure the first command prompt is opened with administrative rights (run as admin).

    – The command is case sensitive (for the pnpclean thing), so make sure you type it as is.

    – There is no visible indication that the command worked, just an empty line.

    Good luck.

  52. shackdan says:

    Worked on my Surface Pro 3 i5 256 🙂

  53. Acidburnsn0w says:

Tried a second time, still did not fix the install problem.

  55. tom says:

  63. Dave Mullaney says:

    Yup – you’re a freakin’ genius – fixed my SP3 i5/256GB

  64. raf says:

It finally worked for me after few tires. One thing I noticed. I was using cmd.exe from sysWOW64 (or something like that) and that didn’t work. Once i used cmd.exe from system32 folder it worked. NO idea if this makes a difference

  65. EShy says:

    Works great.

My issue was a little different. The update was downloaded and while it seemed to hang at 34% when preparing to install it eventually kept going. It still failed to install, I was getting the restart message and windows would just load as if nothing happened.

I tried the fixes from the blog post. This fix seems somehow related (deleting drivers). Microsoft should update their blog post

  66. Andy says:

This worked for me to. Now i got 10122 on my SP3 i7/8/256.
    Thank you!

Worked like a charm on my i7 sp3. Thanks!

  69. Andre says:

After it asks for the reboot, don’t reboot, run the rundll32 command again and then quickly reboot manually. This did the trick for me.

  70. Diane says:

Succeeded on second try; re-running above fixes while update is downloading and preparing to install, and running disk cleanup twice. So, thank you! Now onward to the tablet mode experience.

  71. ML49448 says:

I get an error with the final command saying "The file does not have a program associated with it for performinb this action. Please install a program or , if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs controls panel.

  72. Josh says:

When in doubt, run PSEXEC… Worked a charm on my SP3, thank you.

  77. PatRick says:

Tried twice, didn’t work for me. First try was exactly as described above. Second time I repeated the process (once before the update download, once after, just before restart.

I’m trying to update on a SP3 i5 256… Does anyone have another recipe to try? 🙂

  78. Blisst says:

psexec returned some error.. but tried:
    rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN
on its own from an elevated command prompt and that worked for me.

  79. stephen says:

Yep, this method worked for me this morning on a Surface Pro 3 i7 512GB SSD 16GB RAM, no problems. I had my SP3 in the Microsoft docking station with only a Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo and a 28" LG LED monitor attached to the docking station.
It worked perfectly. The upgrade switch back/forth to the LG extended monitor and the SP3 screen. I have it only on the LG extended monitor now. I did a clean install of Build 10074 before using updates to install Build 10122. Yep it solved my issue with my
    Surface Pro 3 i7 512GB SSD 16GB RAM.

  80. sanjay says:

Thanks. Finally got 10122 up & running.

  86. TWC says:

Tried a half a dozen times and can’t get it to work. Stops at 62 and 18%. Last reboot showed over heat thermometer on the screen and shut down. Don’t know why all the ones I am reading about are working and mine is not. Running a surface pro 3 128.

  87. Hugo Bernier says:

    You guys are geniuses! Thanks.
If anyone has any troubles with the instructions above, I’ve taken the liberty of re-writing the steps above with a bit more details — but all credits go to Pieter and Antonio.

  93. Sekhar says:

Worked like a charm!Great job guys!

  94. Joel says:

    Worked!

  95. kam says:

WTF. THis doesn’t work. I get this:

    PsExec could not start ?s:
The system cannot find the file specified.

    Followed unstructions TO THE LETTER.

  96. Markbis says:

    Worked for me 🙂

  97. Did not work for me — Still stuck at 18% / 62%

  98. Pieter says:

@kam – try not to copy/paste, it messes up the "-" (dash)

  99. Funnznbichler says:

  101. Brian says:

    Worked perfectly – thx.

  102. Joe G says:

Sigh. Tried this 5 times, even running the rundll command multiple times up to the reset. I still get stuck at the terrible 19% installing and copying files 64%.

Im on the Gigabyte p35k laptop with the Intel I7-4700HQ CPU and GeForce 765m graphic card .

  103. Dirk-Jan says:

Bedankt Pieter! M’n SP3 wilde ook niet updaten (ondanks disk cleanup, inclusief driver package, previous installations, etc), maar je workaround werkt!

  104. Luis Madaleno says:

    It’s working for me.
    Installer already at 23%.

  106. Kurt V. says:

Thanks for the advice. Made several attempts, but it worked, unfortunately NOT for me. I am also on a Surface Pro i7 256.

  107. Alessandro says:

    I’ve an Italian SP3 i5 128GB but i’ve not the pnpclean.dll so I can’t do this procedure… 🙁

  108. CVince says:

    Hi all,
Worked for me on a Surface Pro 3 i5 128GB. Just want to thanks you !

  109. Cellar Dweller says:

Yes worked for my XPS 18. I didn’t have to use psexec.exe though. Just ran the command and clicked on (Retry) under settings and it still hangs for a bit at 18-19% but then takes off. Great work.

  110. Danny Alejo says:

This worked great for me, thank you very much! i5/8/256 Surface Pro 3

  111. Kacey Green says:

just the second part the line ending in MAXCLEAN from elevated prompt after uninstalling the video adapter did the trick for me, that was key with the video I got the reboot at 18% and if I did it from ESD file converted to iso it would come back and say
    video driver in the error.

Video without this command failed too.

Uninstall and delete video drivers, run maxclean line, install witout error, run update to get drivers back.

  112. rilim says:

It solved my pc Dell XPS. Thank you very much.

  113. Gerry says:

Had to run the command twice to get the install to succeed. ie, ran the command, tried the update, rolled back, ran command again, tried update, success.

  114. tarome says:

Mucho appreceiated, worked like a charm on my SP3 i5 ! Thanks!

  117. Steve Griffiths says:

    Should have said – I’m on a SP3 i5 also

  118. Benooze59 says:

    Hi gyus,
I used psexec, but no result…i found a solution ! i have uninstalled my intel driver chipset, my ATK hotkeys asus adn my genesys USB driver, and now it’s OK !!! update 10122 installed with success ! and the surprise between 10044 and 10122, the driver for
intel and USB was found by the update 10122! or with the old 10044, the driver was not found 😉 so, just uninstall some driver and it’s ok.(Sorry for my french accent in the texte lol)

  119. Steve says:

Tried twice, not worked 🙁 running Surface Pro 2..

  120. Steve says:

I understand that this is DRIVER INF file related.

so, using device manager I have removed all drivers that are not in-use. For example USB drivers for ‘stuff’ that I have plugged in. Ran clean up again, lets hope it works 🙂

  121. Jim S. says:

Yes, this worked for me. It corrected the "hung at 18%" issue. Update ran successful. Thanks for the fix. This was on the SP3.

  122. Dahawayen says:

This one finally works on my SP3 running 10074. I had previously tried all the other suggested fixes, including uninstalling drivers, etc, but those did not work for me

    1) Ran the "rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN randomly via Administrative prompt at least a dozen times during the Preparing to Install xx% part of the process after download of the update. I ran these between 30% and 85%
    2) Ran the same command another dozen times randomly between 85% and 94%
    3) Ran it again another half dozen times when it hit 95% until 96/97% right before it asked for a reboot

  123. WilmaXT says:

SP3 pro i7: Didn’t work for me either – Guess I have to install a clean Win 8.1, to get to Build 10122. 🙁

  124. Joe says:

3rd time seems to have been the charm.

  125. TimeWalker says:

Tried this on the i5/128GB Surface Pro 2 and it worked at second try. Thanks!

  126. Kwai Chang says:

    perfect on my Surface Pro 3 i5 8GB 256

Perfect! It worked on my surface pro 3 i3 64GB.

  131. Steve says:

As well as running the DRIVER cleanup, removing devices that are no longer used does help, worked for me .

  132. PatRick says:

Tried this three times now. Got as far as 20% / 76% copying files before it stalled the last time. Had to roll back again.

  133. Ken says:

took two attempts with the fix but got there in the end

  134. Morrie says:

I have an SP3 i7 and I’ve tried this a couple of times and it basically overheats everytime.. When you run the program, does it give you any feedback? Mine just goes back to the command prompt… Can’t tell that it’s done anything..

  135. zevy says:

Doesn’t resolve the Surface Pro 3 issue.

  136. shane says:

Worked like a charm on my (non-surface) desktop from 10074. Cheers!

  137. Sting2000 says:

Doesn’t work for my Surface 3 Pro (I5)

  138. pete says:

Worked for me (Acer Aspire 5920G laptop); just one run through needed.

  139. szilagyipal says:

I can’t get this working either, did about 20 times at all stages, with cleanup, without, etc.

  140. Keifer Street says:

Worked perfectly. Thanks a bunch. Saved me from doing a clean install.

  141. Andreas Johansson says:

Thanks! That fixed it, got past that 18%
The command is case sensitive, execute rundll32 exactly as written.

  142. Gerry says:

Worked for me Surface pro 3

  143. Adnan @Microspecialist says:

Tried this a few times and only worked once I did a full disk cleanup, reboot, removed files and folders, killed some processes and retried the "rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN" command. Glad everything is running smoothly!
Lost was my picture password though… :/

  144. O Lewis says:

    Thanks for the fix

  145. Steve says:

worked perfectly on several machines. thank you.

  146. it does not work says:

i mean the psexec / cmd / rundll execute ok, I can see the driver folder shrinks in size BUT windows still stuck at 19% installing + 64% copying files.

  154. HdS says:

    Resolved on Surface Pro 3
    Thanks

  155. gp says:

I had the same issue in my SP3. Restarted using power button + vol up button then ran the rundll command and updated. Installation restarted automatically saying upgraded failed. Tried the rundll command again and this time update was successful.

  156. Mario says:

The "Error in pnpclean.dll. Missing Entry: rundll_pnpclean" error can be resolved by typing case-sensitive: RunDLL_PnpClean

  157. shawn cicoria says:

anybody getting an error on missing entry you MUST type RunDLL_PnpClean exactly as it’s case sensitive.

  158. shawn cicoria says:

  165. nikos says:

    Yes it works. Thank you

  166. Brandon Taylor says:

Failed on my end. HP 120-1136.

  167. Brandon Taylor says:

Tried it again and it worked. It helps if you remove all nonessential hardware — that is to say, all hardware except your original keyboard and mouse — before executing the RUNDLL32.EXE directive. If you use a different keyboard and/or mouse, remove
these and connect your original peripherals While you’re at it, you may want to remove the drivers for any hardware you have disconnected.

  168. avvett says:

    Worked, thanks!

  169. Shawn Johnson says:

I have a SP3, they continually was stuck at the 18%, 62% loaded. Failed with error 080070057-0x20007. Did multiple turns of the psexec fix here, and still failed. Did the disk clean as well with the psexec too, to no avail. Finally worked last night. This
thread takes a couple of fixes and combined. I did it and it finally worked.

Just here to say that this solved my problem. I have a Surface Pro 3 (I5 – 256) and was on a dead end with this error. The hint here was to follow the steps and run "rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN" several times (as others
said) while WU was "preparing itens for install". In fact, every time the percentage changed I ran the command. Not sure if it was needed that many times (maybe just at the end?), but it worked. Thanks!

PTBR: Isso realmente resolveu meu problema.
o WU estava "preparando a instalação" do update 10122. Na verdade, toda vez que o percentual era alterado, eu rodava o comando novamente. Não sei se precisa executá-lo tantas vezes, mas funcionou! Obrigado!

  180. mcnahum says:

What is not properly explained its you have to run the command line : "rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN" during the upgrade around 90% ( I did it multiple time to have It working at the end) …

The article should be modified to reflect it …

How would I open command prompt if it’s stuck on 18% should I force my computer to shut down or something? How I’m I meant to download and use it if it’s stuck on 18% and I can’t do anything

It’s worth a mention, but this command is CaSe sensitive, failing to use upper case fails with an error.

Unfortunately, no amount of running this, re-running it, rebooting, waiting, etc. has fixed the issue.

The installer always sticks at 18% complete, 62% copying files.

Third time did the trick, but I don’t think it was the number of times. Each time it failed I would dig through more of these comments trying slight variations. My gut says it was the guidance to run pnpclean while WU was doing its prep. The only other
thing I did differently on this run was to pull the Ethernet USB adapter out when the patch started to run.
