A few days ago I posted about using Metro applications.  The more time you spend in Windows 8 and in particular the Metro interface it becomes important that even applications that run on the desktop (or desktop mode) need to be able to grab your attention with their notifications (the notification area is great if you are on the desktop, but what if you are full screen in another app or on the start screen?)
