iSCSI ist eine Technologie zum Herstellen einer Verbindung zwischen einem Computer und einem externen Speicherarray über ein Ethernet-Netzwerk. Dabei werden zwei Komponenten benötigt: Ein iSCSI-Initiator (Client) und ein iSCSI Target (Server).

Während aktuelle Windows-Versionen den Microsoft iSCSI Software Initiator als Client-Komponente zum Zugriff auf iSCSI-Speicherarrays schon eingebaut haben, war die notwendige Serverkomponente, um lokalen Speicher via iSCSI zur Verfügung stellen zu können, bisher nur im Windows Storage Server enthalten.

Mittlerweile stellt Microsoft iSCSI Software Target 3.3 für Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Enterprise und Datacenter Editionen kostenfrei zum Herunterladen zur Verfügung:

Mit Hilfe des auch im Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 eingebauten Microsoft iSCSI Software Initiator als Client und einem Windows Server 2008 R2 mit installiertem Microsoft iSCSI Software Target als Server kann man damit problemlos Cluster inklusive Live Migration komplett in Software realisieren. Um zum Beispiel auf dem Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 virtuelle Maschinen via iSCSI zu erreichen, ruft man iscsicpl.exe aus einem cmd-Fenster heraus auf.

Die jetzt von Microsoft zum Herunterladen angebotene Version wird nicht auf der Server Core Rolle unterstützt.
