Momentum – Project Wisdom from the Field on Exchange 2007 (Interview Bob Borges)

Your name: Bob Borges

Company name: Bay State Integrated Technology, Inc.

Your geographic location (country): USA

Project Name/Description: Deploy Exchange 2007 internally into virtualized infrastructure

Objectives of the project: Bring mail in-house / Move away from a hosted solution

Are you piloting or deploying the products: Deploying

Products used in project: Windows Server 2008 and Exchange 2007, Hyper-

Were the objectives stated at the beginning satisfied. Yes

Are you going to be saving money as a result of this project? No not really but we gained control as well as availability of our mail server. Also, due to the way our prior hosted solution worked, we would sometimes have as much as a 20 min delay even for internal messages. As it turns out our internal users (even though we are a small company) were in some cases on different servers. Additionally, we gained much more value in terms of features available to us.

What do you think about the IT Pro Momentum Program? It is new to me but it is very nice. I love the fact that you can submit an issue and get directed to someone that can help me. It is great for non-urgent high level understanding of how things work within the product.

What do you think about the product? Exchange 2007 gives us the power and flexibility to communicate quickly, thereby giving our company the agility we need to prosper in these tough economic times. I love the new Roles and the way exchange is broken down into multiple components, hub, mailbox, edge, etc and we can isolate those roles. I love the concepts behind outlook anywhere and the way outlook web access works.

Any challenges with your deployment? New certificate setup.  I learned much about certificates and certificate services as I went through this deployment.

I see you have Hyper-V listed as a core product you used for this deployment.  How does exchange work in a virtualized environment?  It works great.  For most of our clients when we deploy exchange we have done it on a physical machine.  Now that we have deployed for us with such great results, we will not push our customers to go physical.  In fact, there is a high probability we will recommend virtualized.
