Overview

The Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Capacity Planning Toolkit provides a set of tools and documentation to simplify capacity planning for Office Communications Server 2007 R2. The Capacity Planning Toolkit can be used as a complement to the Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Planning Guide.
This release of the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Capacity Planning Toolkit contains tools and documentation to simplify your hardware planning, provide you with increased knowledge and best practices for performance tuning, and improve your ability to verify the performance of your intended Office Communications Server 2007 R2 deployments.
The Capacity Planning Toolkit is intended for use by IT professionals in a test environment prior to production deployment. These tools should never be used against a live production environment.
The tools in this Toolkit are designed to be used with Office Communications Server 2007 R2 only. If you are searching for tools that work with Live Communications Server 2005, please download the Live Communications Server 2005 Capacity Planning Toolkit from https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=107a5e83-ca59-4bcb-a3bc-27efd97a477d&displaylang=en
Issues addressed in this release of the Capacity Planning Tool:

Issue Fixed: UserProfileGenerator load problem for AV and Appsharing scenario
Explanation: As mentioned in the release notes for the previous OCS 2007 R2 Capacity planning tools release, UserProfileGenerator was generating incorrect load for AV and Appsharing scenarios. This QFE fixes this issue and UserProfileGenerator should generate correct load for various load settings: low, medium & high.
Issue Fixed: Ocsstress needs a _Total instance
Explanation: A “_Total” performance counter instance was added to Ocsstress. This new instance makes it easier to monitor Ocsstress performance counters.
Issue Fixed: Ocsstress should not update the CallsFailed counter for 486 , 603 etc decline specific responses
Explanation: Ocsstress was wrongfully reporting calls which received valid responses such as 486 busy, 603 decline as calls failed. These calls are no longer marked as failed and are considered a successful call-routing scenario.

Microsoft Product Support Reports

Brief Description

Download the scripted system configuration gathering tools. The Microsoft Product Support Reports utility facilitates the gathering of critical system and logging information used in troubleshooting support issues.

Overview

The Microsoft Product Support Reporting Tool facilitates the gathering of critical system and logging information used in troubleshooting support issues. This information helps diagnose problems in the software quicker and provide solutions.
The tool offers the ability to select the particular scenarios for which system configuration data will be collected: General, Internet and Networking, Business Networks, Server Components, Windows Update Services, Exchange Servers and SQL and other Data Stores (MDAC) . Depending on the particular system configuration and the categories selected, Microsoft Product Support Reports might take between 7 to 25 minutes or more to complete the data collection. Please read the readme.txt files for more details about the information collected by each category.
There are two executables, that correspond to each specific OS architecture, 32 or 64 bit. Please make sure to download the version that correspond to your system architecture.
You may install and use an unlimited number of copies of MPSReports solely for the purpose of gathering system information necessary for your support professional to provide you with technical support services requested by you. All other purposes are not supported by Microsoft. Please refer to the EULA for more detailed information regarding your usage rights.
Important Notes
MPSReports require the installation of additional prerequisites in order to be executed, as listed in the System Requirements section.
Although we do our best for the reporting tool to run without making any registry changes or modifications to the operating system or revert back any changes temporarily performed by the scripts or tools used during the collection, we have identified that the Powershell ExecutionPolicy is not reverted back to the default RemoteSigned value used for most Server configurations. This might need to be changed manually for some Server applications to work after running MPSReports. Please read the following technet content for more information and how-to for more information and how-to

ILMerge

Brief Description

ILMerge is a utility for merging multiple .NET assemblies into a single .NET assembly. It works on executables and DLLs alike and comes with several options for controlling the processing and format of the output. See the accompanying documentation for details.

Overview

ILMerge is a utility that can be used to merge multiple .NET assemblies into a single assembly. ILMerge takes a set of input assemblies and merges them into one target assembly. The first assembly in the list of input assemblies is the primary assembly. When the primary assembly is an executable, then the target assembly is created as an executable with the same entry point as the primary assembly. Also, if the primary assembly has a strong name, and a .snk file is provided, then the target assembly is re-signed with the specified key so that it also has a strong name.
ILMerge is packaged as a console application. But all of its functionality is also available programmatically.
There are several options that control the behavior of ILMerge. See the documentation that comes with the tool for details.
ILMerge runs in the v2.0 .NET Runtime, but it is also able to merge v1 or v1.1 assemblies. However it can merge PDB files only for v2 assemblies.
Currently, ILMerge works only on Windows-based platforms. It does not yet support Rotor or Mono.
If you have any problems using ILMerge please contact mbarnett _at_ microsoft _dot_ com. More details are available at the ILMerge web site.

Microsoft Hopper Test Tool for Windows Mobile 6.0, 6.1, and 6.5

Brief Description

Hopper is a software test tool that simulates random user input on mobile devices. Required for certification for Windows Marketplace for Mobile.

Overview

Hopper is a software test tool that simulates random user input on mobile devices providing a sometimes meaningful mean time to failure (MTTF) number. It is designed to find bugs and is not intended to run scenario tests or do "specific user things" - it is completely random. Hopper stresses the entire device and will execute anything accessible through the UI many, many times. It has no knowledge of where it is at any time and has limited ability to detect poor system health. Hopper executes randomly, thus different bugs might be encountered each time the tool runs. Fixing enough bugs to impact MTTF may take many runs. Reproducing specific runs and/or finding the particular bug that caused any specific failure can prove to be difficult. While Hopper excels at finding system stability bugs quickly, it was never designed to debug or diagnose the source of any particular problem. It utilizes a "system snapshot" log at regular intervals which can help you understand fault. Determining device MTTF via stress testing and debugging is a simple process: run a stress tool until the device fails, diagnose the failure, fix the bug, and re-start the stress tool. In theory, each time a bug gets fixed, MTTF increases because the tool runs longer without a failure.

.NET Framework 4 Beta 1 enabled to use Software Transactional Memory (STM.NET Version 1.0)

Brief Description

MSDN DevLab of Software Transactional Memory

Overview

Software Transactional Memory (STM.NET) is a mechanism for efficient isolation of shared state. The programmer demarcates a region of code as operating within a transaction that is “atomic” and “isolated” from other transacted code running concurrently. Transactional memory is considered a promising technology by the academic community and is repeatedly brought up as a welcome technology for the upcoming wave of applications which scale on modern multi-core hardware. The goal is to be able to exploit concurrency by using components written by experts and consumed by application programmers who can then compose together these components using STM. Transactional memory provides an easy-to-use mechanism to do this safely. STM is not a 1:1 lock replacement and provides more functionality than critical sections, reader-writer locks, and other traditional synchronization methods. This functionality has overhead; the hope is that the scalability, productivity, and deadlock freedom gained by this mechanism outweigh the degradation in serial performance. This is an experimental release of the .NET Framework that allows C# programmers to try out this technology, specifically a particular implementation of STM. We are interested in your feedback on your experience using this programming model. Is it valuable and easy-to-use? Does it provide enough functionality? Are you willing to pay with serial performance losses to gain greater scalability? Our implementation is integrated with the framework and tools, it has been extended to provide coexistence with locks, interoperate with traditional transactional technologies, and safely work with existing code.

ASP.NET MVC 2 Preview 1

Brief Description

ASP.NET MVC 2 Preview 1 provides a new Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework on top of the existing ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 runtime.

Overview

ASP.NET MVC 2 is a framework for developing highly testable and maintainable Web applications by leveraging the Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern. The framework encourages developers to maintain a clear separation of concerns among the responsibilities of the application – the UI logic using the view, user-input handling using the controller, and the domain logic using the model. ASP.NET MVC applications are easily testable using techniques such as test-driven development (TDD).
The installation package includes templates and tools for Visual Studio 2008 SP 1 to increase productivity when writing ASP.NET MVC applications. For example, the Add View dialog box takes advantage of customizable code generation (T4) templates to generate a view based on a model object. The default project template allows the developer to automatically hook up a unit-test project that is associated with the ASP.NET MVC application.
Because the ASP.NET MVC framework is built on ASP.NET 3.5 SP 1, developers can take advantage of existing ASP.NET features like authentication and authorization, profile settings, localization, and so on.

The MSIA is built specifically to be a starting point to working with Software Asset Management (SAM). To that end, the MSIA will work with networks that have 250 computers or fewer, and it will locate only Microsoft software. Also note: The results of the scan performed by the MSIA are completely confidential and not sent to Microsoft. For more information about the MSIA, see the MSIA Online User's Guide, or read our FAQ (frequently asked questions).
