Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 SP1 Resource Kit Tools - Client Tools

Brief Description

System Center Mobile Device Manager (MDM) 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Client Tools provides tools to help administrators troubleshoot connections and monitor device synchronization for Windows Mobile devices as part of an MDM system.

Overview

MDM Client Tools provides tools to help administrators troubleshoot connections and monitor device synchronization for Windows Mobile devices as part of an MDM system. The following are tools included in this download:

• MDM Connect Now Tool
• MDM VPN Diagnostics Tool
• MDM Managed Device Status Viewer

MDM Connect Now Tool enables users of Windows Mobile 6.1 managed devices to download new software updates queued since the managed device last synchronized with the MDM system. The tool initiates a session between MDM Device Management Server and a managed device. Once the tool establishes a connection, new software updates are downloaded to the managed device.
MDM VPN Diagnostics Tool helps users diagnose VPN issues between the MDM and the devices it manages. The tool allows users to see the VPN configuration and status on the managed Windows Mobile device and to diagnose any VPN-related problems. The tool also allows the managed device user to collect device logs and send them to a diagnostics team for further analysis.
MDM Managed Device Status Viewer is a troubleshooting tool that enables managed device users to browse through values of Open Mobile Alliance Device Management (OMA DM) management objects, device synchronization information, and a list of all managed programs installed on the managed device.
To learn about additional MDM tools, see System Center Mobile Device Manager Resource Kit Tools.

Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 SP1 Resource Kit Tools - Best Practices Analyzer

Brief Description

Best Practices Analyzer Tool for System Center Mobile Device Manager (MDM) 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) helps you analyze a group of servers to determine if the prerequisites and best practices are met for MDM deployment.

Overview

Best Practices Analyzer (BPA) Tool for MDM 2008 SP1 helps you to analyze the prerequisites for MDM setup and deployment. Because each MDM server component has different prerequisites, the tool helps you to plan and build a successful deployment environment by assessing each server's readiness for MDM before you run MDM Setup.
In addition to analyzing each server's individual readiness, BPA Tool helps you to verify the firewall configuration that MDM requires between servers running MDM Device Management Server and servers running MDM Gateway Server.
Finally, after you deploy MDM, you can run a post-deployment scan to help make sure your installation works properly and follows MDM best practices.
To learn about additional MDM tools, see System Center Mobile Device Manager Resource Kit Tools.

MDM Security Configuration Wizard Templates includes three SCW templates that you can apply to MDM servers to help enhance security by disabling functionality that is not required for the servers.
MDM Active Directory Upgrade Helper helps you detect the Active Directory directory service objects and templates, and also generates a report with details and actions that you can perform to assist you in upgrading MDM.
MDM Set-MDMInstance Cmdlet helps administrators configure several settings - such as database server name, enrollment server name, and port number for MDM servers - that are maintained as an Active Directory service connection point (SCP).
MDM Gateway Bootstrapping Tool automates the steps to deploy required certificates and certificate chain on the server where you plan to install MDM Gateway Server.
MDM Active Directory Configuration Tool (ADConfig) for MDM 2008 is a tool that you use to configure Active Directory for MDM 2008. MDM 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) includes an updated version that is not backwards compatible with MDM 2008.

Brief Description

This article explains how to deploy the DNS Server role in a network containing a single Active Directory domain controller.

Overview

This guide helps you implement Domain Name System (DNS) on the Windows Server 2008 operating system in a small network. Windows Server 2008 uses DNS to translate computer names to network addresses. An Active Directory domain controller can act as a DNS server that registers the names and addresses of computers in the domain and then provides the network address of a member computer when the domain controller receives a query with the name of the computer. This guide explains how to set up DNS on a simple network that consists of a single domain.

Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 KB959596

Brief Description

This update for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 fixes bugs described in KB959596.

Overview

This update for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 fixes bugs relating to large disk support in VMWare VMs and issues relating to P2V, as described in KB959596.
Feature Summary
The issues that are fixed in this release include the following:

  • You use System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 to perform an offline physical to virtual (P2V) conversion. The computer that is running System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 is located on a different subnet from the source computer. However, both computers are configured to use an IP address range, such as 10.x.x.x. The offline P2V conversion fails with the following error message:
Error (3133) Virtual Machine Manager could not connect to source computer servername.domainname.com after it restarted into Windows PE (temporary computer name is p2v-ldjj). Automatic restart to the original operating system is scheduled to occur within 15 minutes. Recommended Action If servername.domainname.com does not restart in 15 minutes, manually restart it back into the original operating system using the boot menu
  • You convert a physical computer to a virtual machine by using VMWare VirtualCenter. One of the disks on the physical computer is larger than 256 gigabytes (GB). You add the VMWare VirtualCenter server to System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008. When you try to create a virtual machine, the operation fails with the following error message:
VMM Cannot find VirtualHardDisk object. Ensure the library object is valid, then try the operation again. ID: 801

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service pack 1 (Full Package)

Brief Description

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 service pack 1 is a cumulative update that contains many new features building incrementally upon .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, and includes .NET Framework 2.0 service pack 2 and .NET Framework 3.0 service pack 2 cumulative updates.

Overview

.NET Framework version 3.5 Service Pack 1 provides the following new features and improvements:

  • ASP.NET Dynamic Data, which provides a rich scaffolding framework that allows rapid data driven development without writing code, and a new addition to ASP.NET AJAX that provides support for managing browser history (back button support). For more information, see What’s New in ASP.NET and Web Development.
  • Core improvements to the common language runtime that include better layout of .NET Framework native images, opting out of strong-name verification for fully trusted assemblies, improved application startup performance, better generated code that improves end-to-end application execution time, and opting managed code to run in ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) mode if supported by the operating system. Additionally, managed applications that are opened from network shares have the same behavior as native applications by running with full trust.
  • Performance improvements to Windows Presentation Foundation, including a faster startup time and improved performance for Bitmap effects. Additional functionality for WPF includes better support for line of business applications, native splash screen support, DirectX pixel shader support, and the new WebBrowser control.
  • ClickOnce application publishers can decide to opt out of signing and hashing as appropriate for their scenarios, developers can programmatically install ClickOnce applications that display a customized branding, and ClickOnce error dialog boxes support links to application-specific support sites on the Web.
  • The Entity Framework is an evolution of the existing suite of ADO.NET data access technologies. The Entity Framework allows developers to program against relational databases in terms of application-specific domain models instead of the underlying database models. For more information see Getting Started with the Entity Framework. The Entity Framework introduces some additional features, including support for new SQL Server 2008 types, default graph serialization of Entities, and the Entity Data Source. With this release, the Entity Framework supports the new date and file stream capabilities in SQL Server 2008. The graph serialization work helps developers who want to build Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) services that model full graphs as data contracts. The Entity Data Source provides a traditional data source experience for ASP.NET application builders who want to work with the Entity Framework.
  • LINQ to SQL includes new support for the new date and file stream capabilities in SQL Server 2008.
  • The ADO.NET Data Services Framework consists of a combination of patterns and libraries, which enable data to be exposed as a flexible REST (Representational State Transfer)-based data service that can be consumed by Web clients within a corporate network or across the Internet. The ADO.NET Data Services Framework makes data service creation over any data source. A conceptual view model of the underlying storage schema can easily be exposed through rich integration with the ADO.NET Entity Framework. Services created using the ADO.NET Data Services Framework, as well as compatible Windows Live (dev.live.com) services, can be easily accessed from any platform. For client applications running on Microsoft platforms, a set of client libraries are provided to make interaction with data services simple. For example, .NET Framework-based clients can use LINQ to query data services and a simple .NET Framework object layer to update data in the service.
  • Windows Communication Foundation now makes the DataContract Serializer easier to use by providing improved interoperability support, enhancing the debugging experience in partial trust scenarios, and extending syndication protocol support for wider usage in Web 2.0 applications.
  • The .NET Framework Data Provider for SQL Server (SqlClient) adds new support for file stream and sparse column capabilities in SQL Server 2008.

Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1

Brief Description

Starting with Exchange 2007, neither the Messaging API (MAPI) client libraries nor CDO 1.2.1 are provided as a part of the base product installation. As a result, there is functionality missing that many applications depend on. Microsoft Exchange MAPI and CDO 1.2.1 provide access to these APIs

Overview

The Messaging API is a COM-like API that provides access to the contents of messaging stores. CDO 1.2.1 (Collaboration Data Objects, version 1.2.1) is a package providing access to Outlook-compatible objects through a COM-based API. Using either CDO or MAPI, a program can connect to a MAPI store, and then perform operations against that store. Starting with Exchange 2007, Microsoft will distribute the MAPI client libraries and CDO 1.2.1 as a Web download.

Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library V3.0 Beta

Brief Description

AntiXSS 3.0 helps you to protect your current applications from cross-site scripting attacks, at the same time helping you to protect your legacy application with its Security Runtime Engine

Overview

The Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library V3.0 (Anti-XSS V3.0) is an encoding library designed to help developers protect their ASP.NET web-based applications from XSS attacks. It differs from most encoding libraries in that it uses the white-listing technique -- sometimes referred to as the principle of inclusions -- to provide protection against XSS attacks. This approach works by first defining a valid or allowable set of characters, and encodes anything outside this set (invalid characters or potential attacks). The white-listing approach provides several advantages over other encoding schemes. New features in this version of the Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library include: - An expanded white list that supports more languages - Performance improvements - Performance data sheets (in the online help) - Support for Shift_JIS encoding for mobile browsers - A sample application - Security Runtime Engine (SRE) HTTP module

Using Microsoft Windows IPSec to Help Secure an Internal Corporate Network Server

Brief Description

Describes how to configure Microsoft® Windows® 2000 IPSec and Windows XP IPSec to help secure an internal network server against network-based attacks from untrusted computers. IPSec enhancements in Windows 2000 service packs and in the Microsoft® Windows Server™ 2003 family are also described.

Overview

This paper describes how to configure Microsoft® Windows® 2000 IPSec and Windows XP IPSec to help secure an internal corporate network server against network-based attacks from untrusted computers. You can significantly enhance the ability of a server to defend against such attacks by requiring IPSec-authenticated, signed, and encrypted communication between computers. This paper describes the security threats to, and the benefits of using IPSec on, an internal corporate network server and uses a scenario to describe the process of IPSec policy design for an internal corporate network. Although the focus of this paper is Windows 2000 and Windows XP IPSec, it also provides information about IPSec functionality enhancements in Windows 2000 service packs and in the Microsoft® Windows Server™ 2003 family.
Microsoft Corporation and Foundstone Strategic Strategy coauthored this paper. The Windows product development team and the Microsoft IT security group customized the IPSec policy design described in this paper for use on an operational basis, during the development of Windows 2000, and they continue to use these policies today. Foundstone evaluated the security that the IPSec policies provide against a sophisticated, untrusted attacker, in laboratory environments.

Overview

With Microsoft Office Outlook Connector, you can use Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 to access and manage your Microsoft Windows Live Hotmail or Microsoft Office Live Mail accounts, including e-mail messages, contacts and calendars for free!

  • Manage your contacts in Windows Live Hotmail.
  • Use advanced options for blocking junk e-mail messages.
  • Manage multiple e-mail accounts in one place.
  • Manage, and synchronize multiple calendars, including shared calendars to Windows Live Calendar from Outlook.

However you will no longer be able to access MSN Calendar through Microsoft Office Outlook.

  1. With Outlook Connector 12.0 installed, synchronize your calendar in Microsoft Office Outlook with the MSN Calendar service one last time.
  2. After synchronization is complete, do not create new items on the MSN Calendar site. If you do, you will have to synchronize again using Outlook Connector 12.0 before migrating to Outlook Connector 12.1.
  3. Install Outlook Connector 12.1.
