Microsoft Office Outlook Tool: Time Zone Data Update Tool for Microsoft Office Outlook

Brief Description

This tool adjusts Microsoft Office Outlook calendar items when there has been a change in time zone definitions (saved in Microsoft Windows) or if the user is making a permanent move to another time zone.

Overview

In order to address time zone changes, this tool will help adjust calendar items in Outlook after the operating system has been updated with new time zone definitions. This tool can be used for general adjustments of calendar items based on changes in time zone definitions saved in Windows or by the user making a permanent move to another time zone. Version 3 addresses several issues reported by customers while using the previous version of the tool. It also allows to access the tool via the Microsoft Windows Start menu.
Specifics:

  • In existing recurring appointments, Outlook has encoded the current DST rules. Instances of recurring appointments that occur during the delta period will appear one hour earlier than they should.
  • For existing single-instance appointments and reminders, Outlook already calculated the universal time coordinate (UTC) value upon appointment creation: If a user creates an appointment while Windows is configured for the old DST rules and the appointment itself occurs during the "new" DST weeks, the appointment will appear one hour earlier than it should.
  • Existing all-day events are associated with 24 specific hours instead of a given date: For the reasons described above, all-day events will appear to shift and thus span two days during the "new" DST weeks.

For addtional information about the time zone changes and Microsoft Office Outlook, refer to the Addressing daylight saving time using the Outlook Time Zone Data Update Tool Support article.

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1

Brief Description

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is a full cumulative update that contains many new features building incrementally upon .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, and includes cumulative servicing updates to the .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework 3.0 subcomponents.

Overview

.NET Framework version 3.5 Service Pack 1 provides the following new features and improvements:

  • ASP.NET Dynamic Data, which provides a rich scaffolding framework that enables rapid data driven development without writing code, and a new addition to ASP.NET AJAX that provides support for managing browser history (back button support). For more information, see What’s New in ASP.NET and Web Development.
  • Core improvements to the CLR (common language runtime) that include better layout of .NET Framework native images, opting out of strong-name verification for fully trusted assemblies, improved application startup performance, better generated code that improves end-to-end application execution time, and opting managed code to run in ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) mode if supported by the operating system. Additionally, managed applications that are opened from network shares have the same behavior as native applications by running with full trust.
  • Performance improvements to WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation), including a faster startup time and improved performance for Bitmap effects. Additional functionality for WPF includes better support for line of business applications, native splash screen support, DirectX pixel shader support, and the new WebBrowser control.
  • ClickOnce application publishers can decide to opt out of signing and hashing as appropriate for their scenarios, developers can programmatically install ClickOnce applications that display a customized branding, and ClickOnce error dialog boxes support links to application-specific support sites on the Web.
  • The Entity Framework is an evolution of the existing suite of ADO.NET data access technologies. The Entity Framework enables developers to program against relational databases in according to application-specific domain models instead of the underlying database models. For more information, see Getting Started with the Entity Framework. The Entity Framework introduces some additional features, including support for new SQL Server 2008 types, default graph serialization of Entities, and the Entity Data Source. This release of the Entity Framework supports the new date and file stream capabilities in SQL Server 2008. The graph serialization work helps developers who want to build Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) services that model full graphs as data contracts. The Entity Data Source provides a traditional data source experience for ASP.NET Web application builders who want to work with the Entity Framework.
  • LINQ to SQL includes new support for the new date and file stream capabilities in SQL Server 2008.
  • The ADO.NET Data Services Framework consists of a combination of patterns and libraries, which enable data to be exposed as a flexible REST (Representational State Transfer)-based data service that can be consumed by Web clients in a corporate network or across the Internet. The ADO.NET Data Services Framework makes data service creation over any data source. A conceptual view model of the underlying storage schema can easily be exposed through rich integration with the ADO.NET Entity Framework. Services created by using the ADO.NET Data Services Framework, and also compatible Windows Live (dev.live.com) services, can be easily accessed from any platform. For client applications that are running on Microsoft platforms, a set of client libraries are provided to make interaction with data services simple. For example, .NET Framework-based clients can use LINQ to query data services and a simple .NET Framework object layer to update data in the service.
  • Windows Communication Foundation now makes the DataContract Serializer easier to use by providing improved interoperability support, enhancing the debugging experience in partial trust scenarios, and extending syndication protocol support for wider usage in Web 2.0 applications.
  • The .NET Framework Data Provider for SQL Server (SqlClient) adds new support for file stream and sparse column capabilities in SQL Server 2008

Microsoft Synchronization Services for ADO.NET 1.0 SP1 Documentation

Brief Description

Download documentation and samples for Synchronization Services for ADO.NET 1.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Overview

Synchronization Services lets you synchronize data from disparate sources over two-tier, N-tier, and service-based architectures. Instead of only replicating a database and its schema, the Synchronization Services application programming interface (API) provides a set of desktop and device components to synchronize data between data services and a local store.

This version of the Synchronization Services documentation contains information about the following new features and capabilities:

  • The ability to synchronize with devices. The first version of Synchronization Services enabled synchronization between a server database and a SQL Server Compact database on the desktop. In service pack 1 (SP1), you can also synchronize between a server database and a SQL Server Compact database on a device.
  • Support for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 change tracking. If you are using SQL Server 2008, we recommend that you use the SQL Server change tracking feature. This feature addresses many of the issues of custom tracking systems and provides a straightforward way to track changes. SQL Server change tracking is supported if you create synchronization commands manually or if you use the synchronization adapter builder.
  • Support for the new data types that were introduced in SQL Server 2008. New types can be mapped to types that are compatible with SQL Server Compact.
  • Tracing of the synchronization process. In distributed applications, tracing can be crucial because it enables you to troubleshoot issues that might otherwise be difficult to identify. Synchronization Services includes tracing for the client and server synchronization providers.

Outlook 2007: Auxiliary Reference Code Samples and Redistributable Installer

Brief Description

This download accompanies the Outlook 2007 Auxiliary Reference documentation. It contains four sample projects, a header file, and a redistributable installer that third-party calendar rebasing tools can use to programmatically update calendars displayed incorrectly due to daylight saving time (DST).

Overview

This set of downloads includes a sample add-in, three sample service providers, a header file, and a redistributable installer.

  • Outlook2007AuxRefSamples.exe installs the following three sample service providers:
    • SampleAddressBookProvider implements a basic address book provider that you can use as a starting point for further customization. It implements the required features of an address book provider, as well as more advanced features such as name resolution. For more information, see About the Sample Address Book Provider in the Outlook 2007 Auxiliary Reference in the MSDN Library.
    • SampleTransportProvider implements a shared network file system transport provider. A transport provider is a DLL that acts as an intermediary between the MAPI subsystem and one or more underlying messaging systems. You can use the code in this sample as a starting point for building a more robust transport provider. For more information, see About the Sample Transport Provider.
    • SampleWrappedPSTStoreProvider uses the PST provider as the back end for storing data. The wrapped PST store provider is intended to be used in conjuction with the Replication API. For more information, see About the Replication API. Most of the functions in the Sample Wrapped PST Store Provider pass their arguments directly to the underlying PST provider. For more information, see About the Sample Wrapped PST Store Provider.
  • SampleOfflineStateAddin.exe installs a COM add-in written in C++. It demonstrates how to receive notifications of connection state changes and how to modify the current state by using the Offline State API. For more information, see About the Sample Offline State Add-In.
  • TZMovelibHeaderFile.exe installs the Tzmovelib.h header file, which is designed to be used with the redistributable installer. This header file contains definitions for flags, constants, enumerations, data structures, interfaces (and their identifiers), macros, and functions for the calendar rebasing APIs. By default, the file is installed in C:\2007 Office System Developer Resources\Outlook 2007 Auxiliary Reference\Rebasing Calendars.
  • OutlookTimeZoneMoveLibRedist.exe is a redistributable installer that installs the assembly file Tzmovelib.dll in C:\Program Files\MsExTmz. Third-party calendar rebasing tools can use the assembly file to programmatically update calendars that are displayed incorrectly because of daylight saving time. With this assembly, developers can use the same APIs that Outlook and Exchange Server use in their calendar rebasing tools.
Note Developers can redistribute only the installer, OutlookTimeZoneMoveLibRedist.exe, and must not redistribute the assembly, Tzmovlib.dll, or any other extracted components separately from the installer.

For more information, see the Outlook 2007 Auxiliary Reference documentation in the MSDN Library. You can also download the documentation from the Microsoft Download Center.

Microsoft Sync Framework v1.0 CTP1 - Devices

Brief Description

Microsoft Sync Framework is a comprehensive synchronization platform for enabling collaboration and offline scenarios for applications, services and devices

Overview

Microsoft Sync Framework is a comprehensive synchronization platform that enables collaboration and offline scenarios for applications, services and devices. Developers can build sync ecosystems that integrate any application, any type of data, using any protocol over any network.
The Microsoft Sync Framework provides a platform for taking web services and databases offline. In addition, it provides optimized P2P sync of any type of file including contacts, music, videos, images and settings. The extensible framework includes built-in support for synchronizing databases, NTFS/FAT file systems, FeedSync compliant feeds (formerly known as Simple Sharing Extensions), devices and web services.
Sync Framework Highlights

  • Add sync support to new and existing applications, services, and devices
  • Enable collaboration and offline capabilities for any application
  • Roam and share information from any data store, over any protocol, and over any network configuration
  • Leverage sync capabilities exposed in Microsoft technologies to create sync ecosystems
  • Extend the architecture to support custom data types including files

Sync Framework for Devices CTP1 Notes
This release contains only the core sync engine you would find in “synchronization.msi” in the PC release. Other features such as the metadata store and file sync provider are not included: some of the omitted features don’t necessarily make sense on devices, others will appear in a future CTP. We are looking for feedback on which are which. In particular, we want to know: what are your scenarios for using the different aspects of the Sync Framework on a device?
We also decided to produce the CTP for a limited platform set: Windows Mobile 5 and 6 for ARM processors. Supporting this subset allows us to give a CTP usable by a very large percentage of mobile developers while still limiting the test matrix for this first CTP. We expect to expand the supported devices and platforms for RTM and we are considering the scope of that as we go forward.
In this CTP we have included the following components:
Microsoft Sync Framework core runtime:

  • Managed (.NET Compact Framework) and unmanaged/native (ARM)
  • Supported platforms are Windows Mobile 5 and 6 (ARM processors only in CTP1)

Installer with Visual Studio integration:

  • Support for adding a reference to the Sync Framework in a mobile project using Visual Studio 2008

Windows HPC Server Debuts in Top25 of World’s Top500 Largest Supercomputers

Brief Description

Ranked at 23, the NCSA ABE cluster performed at 68.5 TFlops and 77.7% efficiency.

Overview

The NCSA used a beta version of Windows HPC Server 2008 to achieve its 68.5 TFlops (teraflops) and 77.7 percent efficiency on 9,472 cores, making this facility one of the most powerful supercomputing systems in the world and the fastest Windows cluster.
“This is about a ten percent improvement over the results we achieved running Linux,” said Robert Pennington, deputy director of the NCSA. “What makes these results even more impressive is that when we deployed Windows on our cluster, which has more than a thousand nodes, we went from bare metal to running the LINPACK benchmark programs in just four hours. We’ve never had a software setup on a supercomputing cluster go as quickly or as smoothly as that before.”

Synchronizing Images and Files in Windows Vista and XP Using Microsoft SyncToy

Brief Description

The Smart Way to Copy Files.
This white paper provides an overview of SyncToy, and explains how it can be used to enhance your file management workflow.

Overview

Increasingly, computer users are using different folders, drives, and even different computers (such as a laptop and a desktop) to store and retrieve files. There are new sources of files coming from every direction: digital cameras, e-mail, cell phones, portable media players, camcorders, PDAs, and laptops. Yet managing hundreds or thousands of files is still largely a manual operation. In some cases it is necessary to move files from one place to another; in other cases there is a need to keep two storage locations exactly in sync. Some users manage files manually, dragging and dropping from one place to another and keeping a mental card catalog in their heads. Others use one or more applications of one sort or another to provide this functionality for them.
Now there is an easier way. SyncToy is a free PowerToy for Microsoft Windows XP that provides an easy to use, highly customizable program to help copy, move, and synchronize different directories. Most common operations can be performed with just a few clicks of the mouse, and additional customization is available without adding complexity. SyncToy can manage multiple sets of directories at the same time; it can combine files from two folders in one case, and mimic renames and deletes in another. Unlike other applications, SyncToy keeps track of renames to files and will make sure those changes get carried over to the synchronized folder.
Note: We've taken great care to ensure that this tool operates as it should, but it is not part of Windows and is not supported by Microsoft Technical Support. For this reason, Microsoft Technical Support is unable to answer questions about SyncToy. To speak to other users and contribute feedback about your experiences with SyncToy, please use the SyncToy File Synchronization forums accessible from https://forums.microsoft.com/sync/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=2026&SiteID=75.

SyncToy v2.0

Brief Description

SyncToy helps you copy, move, rename, and delete files between folders and computers quickly and easily.

Overview

Overview
SyncToy 2.0 for Windows is available as a free download from the Microsoft Download Center. The easy to use, customizable application helps you copy, move, rename, and delete files between folders and computers.
There are files from all kinds of sources that we want to store and manage. Files are created by our digital cameras, e-mail, cell phones, portable media players, camcorders, PDAs, and laptops. Increasingly, computer users are using different folders, drives, and even different computers (such as a laptop and a desktop) to store, manage, retrieve and view files. Yet managing hundreds or thousands of files is still largely a manual operation. In some cases it is necessary to regularly get copies of files from another location to add to primary location; in other cases there is a need to keep two storage locations exactly in sync. Some users manage files manually, dragging and dropping from one place to another and keeping track of whether the locations are synchronized in their heads. Other users may use two or more applications to provide this functionality.
Now there is an easier way. SyncToy, a free PowerToy for Microsoft Windows, is an easy to use, highly customizable program that helps users to do the heavy lifting involved with the copying, moving, and synchronization of different directories. Most common operations can be performed with just a few clicks of the mouse, and additional customization is available without additional complexity. SyncToy can manage multiple sets of folders at the same time; it can combine files from two folders in one case, and mimic renames and deletes in another case. Unlike other applications, SyncToy actually keeps track of renames to files and will make sure those changes get carried over to the synchronized folder.
We have collected feedback from the discussion forum on the Windows XP Professional Photography web site, from customer feedback surveys, from a large number of professional and hobbyist photographers at Microsoft, and from various world-wide forums, sites, reviews and blogs on the web. Based on your feedback, the following features were added to this release of SyncToy:

  • Dynamic Drive Letter Assignment: Drive letter reassignment will now be detected and updated in the folder pair definition.
  • True Folder Sync: Folder creates, renames and deletes are now synchronized for all SyncToy actions.
  • Exclusion Filtering Based on Name: File exclusion based on name with exact or fuzzy matching.
  • Filtering Based on File Attributes: The ability to exclude files based on one or more file attributes (Read-Only, System, Hidden).
  • Unattended Folder Pair Execution: Addressed issues related to running scheduled folder pairs while logged off.
  • Folder Pairs With Shared Endpoints: Ability for folder pairs associated with the same or different instances of SyncToy to share end-points.
  • Command line enhancements: Added the ability to manage folder pairs via the command line interface.
  • Re-Architect Sync Engine: The SyncToy engine has been rearchitected to provide scalability and the ability to add significant enhancements in future releases.
  • Sync engine is also more robust insomuch that many single, file level errors are skipped without affecting the entire sync operation.
  • Sync Encrypted Files: Sync of Encrypted files works when local folder and files are encrypted, which addresses the common scenario involving sync between local, encrypted laptop PC folder and remote, unencrypted desktop PC folder.
  • 64-Bit Support: SyncToy now has a native 64-bit build (x64 only) for 64-bit versions of Windows.
  • Folder pair rename
  • Sub-folder Exclusion Enhancements: Descendents created under excluded sub-folders are automatically excluded. Usability improvements for the sub-folder exclusion dialog.
  • Folder Pair Metadata Moved: Folder pair metadata removed from MyDocuments to resolve any issues with server-based folder pair re-direction setup.
  • Setup Improvements: Integrated setup with single self-extracting archive file and no extra downloads if you already have .NET Framework 2.0 installed. Enabled silent install for the SyncToy Installer file (see readme.txt file for more information). Removed combine and subscribe actions.
  • Removed combine and subscribe actions.

Please continue to send us feedback about our tool, using the SyncToy - File Synchronization forum (listed below).
Note: We've taken great care to ensure that this tool operates as it should, but it is not part of Windows and is not supported by Microsoft Technical Support.
