Years ago I used to teach a Siebel-on-SQL Server only workshop. Then through the merger & acquisition with Oracle, I now pickup JDE/PSFT/SEBL. So what I've done is made a workshop that uses examples from each of these applications.
What the attendees learn is that under the covers, many of these applications are the same: dynamic query generator, too many or wrong indexes, etc... and that in general, high end database architecture is the same for all these canned applications.
The beauty of it is that you can build in a scalable design in the very beginning that will live well into the future. Most problems that we face are fundamental design issues with disk. They take all the MS defaults, or they don't understand what HA *really* means. They focus on a part of technology (ie. Clustering) and think that will solve their problems... then you find out that they never tested their database restored processes... so while they are protecting the CPU and NIC cards, they have completely ignored protecting their data.
I talk about topics like that within the context of how SQL works with enterprise applications. I take examples from many of the cases that I see every day and we work through them in the class. For example, you know how to use profiler-- great-- but do you know how to reproduce the query inside Management Studio? Most people do not-- even the Oracle engineers who write the code call me for help on this. If you can't get a repro... then you can't debug, etc...
Overall, what I try and present is a repeatable methodology for how to approach enterprise level database architecture with SQL Server technology within the context of canned applications. We pick up at the ODBC level and work down to the database and disk for how to scale.
I try and bring to the workshop my years in consulting (at Microsoft & SAP), my years of doing operational support (Fortune 100 & Microsoft's SAP system), and my customer visits of what "works and doesn't work". My philosophy has been, "If I can work with you before you start your project, I can cut 2 weeks off your time line."
The only very specific topic is the Siebel data loading section. Siebel has a unique tool that is very bad, but everyone Siebel owner has to use it. I show you how to make it work with SQL Server so your project finishes on time.
I encourage people to bring their own performance data, and we can look at it in class.
Sometimes we do this as hands on, but the lab space is often hard to get at remote locations. So I do demos on my laptop and show the class how to solve the issues that way.
