The Role of Certification in Building and Motivating Your Team


I used to play basketball in high school, which won’t surprise anyone who’s met me – I’m a 5 foot 10 woman and have been since, oh, about grade 5. However I quit in grade 11 after just 2 seasons. The reason? The coach wouldn’t let me expand my skills. I wanted to work on dribbling and other ball handling skills. He wanted me to be a rebounder and nothing else. He wasn’t interested in developing my skills…he just wanted to win. And so I walked away.

Whenever the topic of IT certifications comes up, several arguments against come up including that certifications aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on and that employees get certified and then leave for another job. However, a good certification will test and prove actual knowledge and, perhaps more importantly for most team managers of IT staff, professional development opportunities can enhance an employee’s productivity and cultivate loyalty and dedication.
