The first beta version of Silverlight 1.0 and a roadmap for the product and other related technologies is now available. Microsoft also has an alpha version of Silverlight 1.1, a NET Framework version of Silverlight plus Expression Studio for Web and creative designers.

Today, Microsoft’s relationship with both developers and designers took another step forward. At MIX 2007 — Microsoft’s conference for Web designers, developers and decision-makers who make their living at the forefront of the Web — the company announced the official release of Microsoft Expression Studio and offered new details about Microsoft Silverlight and what it offers developers and designers as part of the proven and widely used .NET platform. Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform implementation of .NET for delivering the next generation of media experiences and Rich Interactive Applications (RIAs) for the Web.

This morning we'll show you that these media capabilities of Silverlight represent just the first of three parts of a larger story about Silverlight. The second part of that story is about how we're enhancing Silverlight to be a much deeper and broader platform for rich Internet applications. Specifically, we're announcing today that we're bringing .NET technology together with Silverlight, and that Silverlight is being transformed into an amazingly powerful cross-platform extension to our entire .NET development and design environment, specifically factored to run in a browser. The Web over the last years has been mostly about AJAX, about increasing the richness of the user experience through the magic of DHTML, and clever browser hackery. But AJAX development has its limitations, and certainly there are better languages than JavaScript to use for many of the sophisticated apps that developers want to build. In this respect, Silverlight changes the game by giving you a new choice for developing incredibly sophisticated, rich Internet applications in the language of your choice. It's a first class .NET runtime environment, allowing you to leverage existing skills and tools across the continuum of server and service, browser, mobile device, XMA, even on the game console. Silverlight brings .NET to the universal Web, but for those of you who aren't deeply familiar with the abilities of .NET, let me just remind you of the power of the .NET development of experience first desktop applications, apps that for some time now have taken advantage of the rich native capabilities of WPF on Windows.
