Migrating from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012 R2

Hello Folks,

Are you still supporting infrastructure from 2003?

Are you one of those IT Pros that think “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”?  If so, I’m sorry to say that End of Life (EOL) is approaching fast (July-2015).  So you have less than 399 days remaining of support.  We estimate that a full server Migration can take up to 200 days to perform.  If you add applications testing and migration as well, your Migration time can increase by an additional 300 days.  Basically is you have not started your migration process you may already be running late.

The process you need to follow has not changed for a long time. The tools have… Not the process.

The session I delivered in Houston at TechEd is one where we dug into the process of migrating your infrastructure to the latest OS.   This session covered how to migrate/Upgrade various foundation services like:

  • Active Directory
  • DHCP
  • DNS
  • File/Print
  • and more.

Migrating is just the beginning…  Ongoing management is crucial.  Like the song says, “It’s the end of the world as you know it”…  But you’ll be fine.

Here is the entire session as delivered at TechEd North America 2014 in Houston Texas.  By the way the session code was DCIM-B367 and you can see the video here or on the Channel 9 site where the deck is also available.

Here on CANITPRO.NET we have covered some of those topics before.

There are also some very valuable online resources to help you with your migrations.  I suggest the Migrating to Windows Server 2012 Training on Microsoft Virtual Academy.
