Help Protect Your Friends And Family From Scams – Part 2

Hello Folks,

A while back Chris Di Lullo wrote a piece on protecting your friends and family from phone scams.  Well the bad guys must have been reading our blog because they have updated their “Modus operandi” or method of operation.

Instead of calling and pretending to be from Microsoft offering to help “fix your window”.  They now are emailing you with something like the following:

It looks pretty legit, but as always:

  1. Microsoft doesn’t call people out of the blue to offer technical support.
  2. We will not email you and threaten cancellation of your accounts.
  3. We will never email you an executable directly. If you get one posing as a patch, don’t run it….

As Chris, so eloquently put it in his post. “The best way to help those friends and family members that rely on you for tech support is to arm them with information. Not only are you helping them, you’re helping yourself, if they avoid the scam, you avoid having to clean it up.”

And I thought it would be a good idea to repost this great infographic that some of the folks here at Microsoft Canada have put together on how to avoid scams. ALL SCAMS.

 

Remember….  BE SUSPICIOUS OF ANY UNSOLICITED CALLS/EMAILS FROM ANYONE OFFERING TO HELP WITH ANY COMPUTER PROBLEMS.
