Running Vista as a standard user
So a few weeks back Rick was mentioning to me that for the first time ever he is running as a standard user on his Vista PC (he has been for 10 months now!). I backed up, then blew away my Toshiba M7 the other day and loaded up Vista RC2 and decided to take the plunge. I am now a standard user on my primary Vista RC2PC. This is the first time that I have ever run a desktop as a non-admin. Now I have logged into many servers as a non-admin and there were struggles but it was necessary. Logging on to a desktop as a standard user, well I tried that and with XP it was not a lot of fun. I am happy to say the experience is much better in Vista.
I know a lot of technical people balk at the idea of running as a standard user, and curse with every UAC prompt that pops up. Hey, I did too!!! BUT with RC2, after the initial install of all my apps it has been smooth sailing and I encourage you to do it as well. Yes you get the occasional prompt for administrative credentials but in my opinion a much more secure desktop is well worth the occasional annoyance. So give it a try and let me know your experiences with UAC and a standard user account.
